Loudspeaker technology has developed at a rapid pace over the last couple of decades. Dispersion has become incredibly precise and predictable. Coverage across the sound field has become smoother and more uniform. Throw distances have increased and box sizes have decreased.

In many respects, a compact loudspeaker like the dBTechnologies VIO X206 is a result of these types of developments. Gone are the days where small size means small performance. The X206 is indeed compact (65cm x 27cm x 21cm) and fairly lightweight at 17.3kg. The cabinet houses two 6.5-inch transducers and a 1-inch compression driver. Like most dBTechnologies products, it’s self-powered with a built-in 900W RMS Class-D Digipro G3 amplifier for a maximum SPL of 131dB and a commendably broad frequency response of 66Hz–19.5kHz (-10dB).

But aside from its impressive performance specs, the VIO X206 has a nifty trick up its sleeve. Its standard 60° x 90° horn can be swapped out for a 100° x 15° waveguide, instantly transforming it from a point source box for small to medium gigs into an array-able cabinet ready for larger scale applications. This makes the X206 uncommonly versatile and thus an attractive option for those needing adaptability.

ARRAY OF OPTIONS

Take one look at the X206 and you can see how it presents itself as an ideal point source loudspeaker for a variety of smaller sound reinforcement applications. The slim form factor makes for neat and discreet wall or pole mounting in spaces anywhere from pubs and restaurants to churches and function rooms. Horizontal and vertical brackets for the X206 are available from dBTechnologies to suit a venue’s needs, including pole mounting, wall mounting, and truss mounting. For portable use, the X206 needs an adaptor to fit a regular speaker stand.

dBTechnologies has enhanced the X206’s functionality with Ease Focus predictive software and Aurora Net control and monitoring software. Connect via the RDNet protocol using the Data In etherCON port on the back of the X206, and use Data Out to daisy chain with extra modules in a line array configuration. The software is an exception value-add which lets you get the most out of a pair or group of X206s – 32-bit DSP processing allows for accurate delays, phase visualisations, EQ curves, and so on – without moving from the FOH position.

The dBTechnologies Vio X206 covers a lot of bases for small- to medium-sized sound reinforcement applications, and it sounds bigger than it looks. Not only a capable, full-range and versatile point source box, the X206’s line array capability means it can meet more specific live or installation criteria.

BOX OF SURPRISES

NAS sent us two X206s loaded with the 90° x 60° rotatable horn. Chris and I set them up in the empty auditorium of a local church that’s definitely too big a space for them to fully cover on their own, but it was a chance to see how hard they’d try. My first observation was how far these compact boxes can throw. A two-position ‘HF Correction’ switch on the back of the unit offers high frequency optimisation depending on your throw distance requirements in both point source and line array applications. I could stand about 15m back without key elements in program material falling apart in the slightest. Snare drums, vocals, guitars and percussion all felt present and detailed when reasonably on axis. However, moving laterally at this kind of distance showed where the X206’s capabilities are stretched as its coverage is less predictable when more distant. Moving in closer yielded a smoother coverage from left to right across the stereo spread of the two loudspeakers set up perpendicularly. Top tip: if you’re using the X206’s on sticks, play with the rotation of each box in small increments until the horizontal coverage becomes nice and uniform at your audience’s average listening distance – I found there’s a definite sweet spot and things quickly get lumpy when you deviate from it.

The X206 is a surprisingly full-range box. Perhaps I say ‘surprisingly’ because its compactness dulled my expectations, but it sounds noticeably bigger than it looks, especially in the low end. Bass frequencies emanate with as much confidence as the midrange albeit with less articulation, but still plenty enough to not feel tinny, small or weak in a medium-sized space. Of course, the X206 can’t break the laws of physics – if you want chest-rattling doof, plug in a subwoofer. Otherwise, as far as tone goes, I found the generous dose of high mids from the horn can get fatiguing if you’re standing right in the firing line. However, this midrange presence makes vocals eminently mix-able even in a dense production. The Digipro amps supply enough depth and headroom to handle several instruments and vocals without sacrificing clarity or space.

TO THE POINT

My time with the dBTechnologies Vio X206 was spent using it as a point source box. In this configuration, the X206 is capable of a lot more than its size suggests, and perfect for anything from a solo musician playing a gig in the corner of a pub, to being the primary PA for a house of worship, or fill supplements to a larger FOH system. Conference spaces and function centres would benefit from having a couple of X206s in the store room, as would a rental or production company for setting up some last minute delays or stage fills at an outdoor event. The built-in amplification results in quick setup and the sleekness of the box means you can put it just about anywhere.

But should you wish to up the ante and cater for much larger events and audience sizes, the Vio X206 continues to put up its hand. Using it as a line array with the 100° x 15° waveguide means much further throw distances and more precise pattern control, with the full reinforcement of predictive and management software to hone the system to perfection.

The iconic Shure SM7B dynamic microphone needs no introduction. Neither does its infamous ‘inadequacy’ – a notoriously low output. For many, the SM7B’s demand for a huge amount of clean gain was a dealbreaker. Not many prosumer audio interfaces and podcast recorders can supply enough gain to record softer material without hugely raising the noise floor. For everyone else using the SM7B in spoken word or other low-SPL applications, it generally needs to be paired with a high quality preamplifier, or an in-line gain booster like a Cloudlifter.

Besides its low-output snafu, the SM7B is a legendary microphone. A tight polar pattern with excellent rear rejection makes it perfect in the studio for vocals, guitar cabs, or even snare drums. In the podcast studio or voiceover booth, the SM7B excels in reproducing a natural and warm vocal tone on pretty much any voice. The lengthy grille is among the most effective in its class at stopping plosives without the need for a separate pop filter. The manoeuvrable Y-mount allows for flexible positioning and the adjacent XLR connector feeds a cable tidily along the mic stand. Ask recording engineers, radio presenters, podcasters, musicians – not many will have a bad word to say about the SM7B.

POWER UP

Big news. Shure has listened to its users, addressed the low output niggle with the SM7B, and built a solution right into the mic. Meet the SM7dB. It’s aptly named, because this revamped version gives you a bunch of free gain.

Like a Cloudlifter, the SM7dB’s built-in preamplifier needs phantom power to work. A switch on the rear lets you boost the output by 18dB or 28dB –more than enough to pump a juicy signal into even the most pedestrian of preamps in a mixer or audio interface.

I like having the two gain options. Some people sing, speak or rap louder than others. For the quiet ones, +28dB is the go. Pair this with clean gain from a nice preamp and you can capture even whisper-quiet sources with ease and clarity. In fact, it opens up a whole new horizon of recording options. Normally I wouldn’t think to record an acoustic guitar with an SM7B. But with the SM7dB? Even the most delicate fingerpicked parts can be captured noise-free.

For the most part I found myself sitting on the +18dB setting as it’s just enough to boost the signal to the input level of a typical condenser mic, but not so much that you’re nearly clipping after adding a touch of preamp gain. For louder sources in the studio you can bypass the preamp altogether and run passive.

The Shure SM7B’s low output is the primary reason why people might think twice about buying one of their own. With the SM7dB and its built-in phantom-powered preamp, Shure has loaded the mic with +28dB of extra clean gain, eliminating the need for a peripheral gain-boosting device. It’s all the goodness of the SM7B at a guaranteed optimum input level.

SAME BUT BETTER

The SM7dB sports a HPF and mid boost EQ like the original, but with what I think is a more tactile and easy-to-use design than the original’s recessed sliding switch. These operate regardless of whether the mic’s preamp is activated or not. Shure has made minor aesthetic modifications to the SM7dB. While the body shares the same matte black finish, a subtle black Shure logo lines both sides of the case and there’s a small pop of bright green on the ‘dB’ printed around the collar.

A key question is whether the re-engineering of the SM7dB has created sonic differences from the original SM7B in any way. Shure maintains this is not the case. You’re getting all the charm of the original with the added value of a gain boost.

The other question is whether the built-in preamp impacts the mic’s tone at all. There may be a very minor high-mid lift when the preamp is activated, but it’s so subtle I couldn’t confidently say it’s a definite colouration from the preamp.

Who will buy the SM7dB? Well, it’s fair to say most people already in the market for an SM7B will own a preamp capable of gaining it up without extra ‘help’ – which is why, for the extra A$150, I doubt the SM7dB will outsell the SM7B.

However, for everyone else, the SM7B’s low output is the primary reason why they might still be on the fence about buying one of their own. For those who fall into this category, the SM7dB is a definite no-brainer – and a bullseye of a product from Shure.

Highway Series follows in the footsteps of Fender’s Acoustasonic lineup. Released in 2019, Acoustasonic blurs the lines between acoustic and electric guitar design, feel and function.

After spending a few minutes with Highway Series, it clearly borrows from Acoustasonic’s design, but it’s also clearly less of an attempt to be an acoustic/electric guitar hybrid. These are unashamedly acoustic guitars, and the only thing that could make you think otherwise is their thinness and the location of the tone and volume knobs. Otherwise, the playing experience feels like an acoustic, it resonates like an acoustic, and when plugged in, sounds like an acoustic.

However, it’s still smaller than a ‘real’ acoustic guitar. According to Fender, this design decision was to make Highway Series more attractive to guitarists who spend a lot of time on stage, desiring a more comfortable and ergonomic instrument without sacrificing acoustic tone in a live situation.

ZERO DREAD

Fender sent AT a Highway Series Dreadnought acoustic guitar. Dreadnought is one of the larger acoustic guitar shapes, but don’t let that fool you into thinking the Highway Series guitars are large. Upon arrival I couldn’t help but notice that, although the shape of the top is indeed dreadnought, the thin profile makes the guitar beautifully ergonomic. The contoured back makes the instrument sit neatly against the body much like a Stratocaster.

Manufactured in Fender’s facility in Ensenada, Mexico, Highway Series is a beautifully designed guitar. The body is a 5.7cm-thick hollowed out piece of mahogany with its wavy woodgrain pattern glistening under the matte finish. A mahogany neck is overlaid with an Indian rosewood fingerboard with micro-tilt adjustment and a Strat-style headstock and tuners. An understated railroad binding on the solid Sitka spruce top gives it a vintage vibe. The bridge and knobs are a matching ebony-coloured wood.

Both the Dreadnought and Parlor models that form the Highway Series do not have cutaways. Whether that’s a dealbreaker or not is a personal choice, but I imagine a cutaway would slightly compromise the resonance you might get out of the small body – and resonance is a key priority for Fender when designing these guitars.

IN THE HAND

Let’s talk about expectations vs reality. I knew the Highway Series wasn’t going to project sound the way my Martin does. That didn’t keep me from holding a tiny hope that it would sound more like a ‘proper’ acoustic guitar than it does. What I’m saying is, even if you try to manage your expectations before strumming a first chord on a Highway Series guitar, you probably won’t be blown away by its natural acoustic voicing.

But I let the guitar sit in the living room for a few days where I knew I’d pick it up at random and hopefully bond with it. Slowly but surely, it grew on me. I began to appreciate the confident resonance and balanced tone radiating from the floating X-braced body which undoubtedly sounds bigger than it is. The bolt-on mahogany neck with a slim profile felt buttery smooth and eminently playable. Dynamically, the guitar responded with ease to being strummed vigorously with a hard plectrum, or gently fingerpicked at low volume. Of course it doesn’t have the luscious low end of a full-size dreadnought or jumbo, but I was increasingly convinced the Highway Series’ comfort and versatility gives it a place in a guitarist’s collection.

FISHMAN FLUENCE

Noodling on the sofa is one thing. Playing live is another. Fender assures us that Highway Series is right at home on stage. That’s largely thanks to the interesting black pickup that curves around the neck-end of the soundhole. Fishman Fluence is a family of pickups designed mostly for electric guitar, but Fender and Fishman worked together to custom-design the version in Highway Series, specifically for Highway Series. That’s right – you won’t find this pickup in any other guitar on the market.

Most notably, Fluence isn’t a piezo system. Piezo pickups are the traditional choice for acoustic guitars but Fender treads a different path here.

Like a piezo, Fluence is still powered by a 9V battery accessed at the back of the guitar body. The pickup has a warm tone with abundant low end thanks in part to its strategic placement. Being a smaller body, there’s a proclivity for the reduced resonance potential of Highway Series to result in a strident and harsh tone if the pickup sat near the bridge, closer to where a piezo system would be. This is offset quite effectively by situating it right at the base of the neck, delivering a much deeper and richer plugged-in sound. Through a nice PA, the Fishman Fluence sounds the business with a big, lush and enveloping richness. I noted how little nasal honk was present compared to the piezo pickups typically installed in acoustic guitars where I often carve out a big chunk around 1kHz. Fluence also sounds less ‘dry’ to my ears than a piezo system, and responds favourably to compression, reverb and delay.

Controls on the Highway Series are analogue, as opposed to Acoustasonic with its onboard DSP. There’s a simple Volume knob and a secondary Tone knob that sounds like a basic mid scoop. Extra tone sculpting control would be useful, and this is one area where Highway Series could be easily improved. A basic three-band EQ, for example, is fairly standard on a piezo pickup system and in the case of Highway Series would be of much value to a performing guitarist. The single tone knob means, if you desire to shape your tone with more nuance, you’d want to run the guitar through an EQ pedal. If anything, the plugged-in sound of a Highway Series guitar is at risk of being over-enthusiastic in the bass frequencies, especially in a sub-heavy PA environment. Again, nothing an EQ pedal can’t fix.

LIFE IS A HIGHWAY

At first glance, Highway Series is a peculiar product (as was Acoustasonic), and the only way to make head or tail of it is to live with it for a while. Having spent a few weeks with the instrument, my conclusion basically aligns with Fender’s proposition: acoustic guitarists who spend a lot of time on stage – Highway Series is for you. Unless you have a particular affection for the bulk of a full-size acoustic guitar, Highway Series is more ergonomic and comfortable to wear, hold, and play for long periods. The Fishman Fluence pickup means the physical downsize doesn’t result in a sonic downsize. Fluence excels in a live setting. I only wish there was more tonal control.

And, on the occasion where you find yourself jamming on the tour bus or in a motel room, it’s nice to know the Highway Series doesn’t sound like it’s made of cardboard but can actually project its voice commendably. Still, I wouldn’t expect many people will buy one of these guitars for their acoustic tone, and you probably won’t reach for one in a studio recording situation. Fender has reimagined the acoustic guitar for ergonomics and live sound performance, and if you’re missing either or both of those things, then you owe it to yourself to take a look.

Mixing in small rooms is a fact of life. Not everyone has a perfectly treated mix environment where sound waves have the room to develop and the pesky problem frequencies are addressed with their own Helmholtz resonators.

The issue is, how can you trust your mixes if you’re in a room that’s acoustically tarnishing the true response of your expensive studio monitors? Or if the room’s modest size means you’re sitting half a metre too close to your monitors than their optimum listening distance?

Option one: mix on headphones. Option two: drop a couple of grand on acoustic treatment. Option three: try some ultra nearfield studio monitors.

GET CLOSER

The Kali Audio IN-UNF studio monitors occupy this ‘ultra nearfield’ category. A clue is its unconventional form factor, which diverges from a typical rectangular speaker cabinet with forward-facing drivers that’s placed at least a metre away. Rather, with an ideal listening distance of 0.8m, the IN-UNF is designed to be up close and personal. It’s the audio equivalent of ultra short throw projection in the sense that it’s optimised for a short ‘throw’ distance. This configuration achieves a couple of things. Firstly, it means you can monitor at lower levels. Secondly, it reduces the influence of a room’s acoustics to the degree that the proximity means your ears receive more direct sound and less reflected sound.

The IN-UNF is a three-way monitoring system in Kali’s Project Independence line of products. The two ball-shaped satellites house the same coaxial drivers used in Kali Audio’s IN-5 and IN-8 with a four-inch midrange driver and one-inch textile dome tweeter extending up to 25kHz (±3dB). The subwoofer (which could be mistaken for a CPU tower) is designed to sit on your desk – not on the floor. Two horizontally opposed 4.5-inch drivers cancel out vibrations transmitted to the desk’s surface and supply low frequency extension down to 47Hz (±3dB). Crossover points are at 280Hz and 2.8kHz.

Hooking the system up begins with the subwoofer. Once powered via IEC cable, plug the two passive satellites into the sub using the included banana connectors. Audio input options include balanced 6.5mm TRS, stereo 3.5mm, USB-C, and Optical. The USB-C input means you can use the IN-UNF without an audio interface.

ALL ABOUT LOCATION

Positioning of each unit is of crucial importance. One thing I appreciated about the Kali Audio IN-5 was its hyper accurate stereo imaging. To achieve the same precision with the IN-UNF, Kali Audio insists the satellites must sit in a very particular spot relative to the subwoofer, denoted on the included A4 placement card with traced positions. Aiming the satellites directly up at your ears is important, too, and easily done thanks to the rounded silicone pads they sit on. The subwoofer can sit vertically or horizontally. I elected to use the sub horizontally as a monitor riser. It’s a big unit (49cm wide, 29cm deep, 13cm tall), so sitting it vertically may be your only option if your desk isn’t very deep.

A series of dip switches sit next to the input connectors. Settings for different placements and configurations (boundary EQ) are available here, including 2dB boosts for bass, mids, and treble, and a 4dB bass boost on its own.

Full-range studio monitoring in close proximity: that’s what the Kali Audio IN-UNF offers, and it pulls it off. The three-way ultra nearfield monitoring system uses the same coaxial drivers as the acclaimed IN-5 and IN-8 monitors to deliver accurate sound and precise stereo imaging in a mixing environment where space is limited.

ULTRA NEARFIELD

How’s the ultra nearfield experience? I have to be honest – it takes some getting used to. With typical studio monitors sitting horizontally at ear level, I am accustomed to the stereo image spreading out in front of me like a widescreen TV. Because the IN-UNF satellites sit at desk height angled up – much like a pair of Logitech computer speakers – listening to tunes with the expectation of a studio monitor experience was initially disorienting, and felt somewhere in between listening on headphones and being in a fishbowl.

After telling myself to give the monitors a proper go, my ears began to settle into the IN-UNF experience. The full stereo spread is still very much present; all the precision of the bigger IN-Series siblings is evident in the IN-UNF and imaging is firm and articulate. It’s just lower. That may sound weird and obvious, but it took a few days before it felt natural.

One thing’s for sure: tonally, the IN-UNF’s are excellent studio monitors. Music is presented with a flat, honest neutrality. High and low frequencies extend smoothly in either direction. Worth noting is how the sub (on its flat setting) beautifully lifts the low end without sacrificing accuracy, and the unit’s placement at desk height between the satellite speakers seems to help everything glue together. On a slap bass track, for example, both the metallic ‘snap’ of the strings and the thump of the bottom end emanate from the same physical point, resulting in a super tight, focused and broadband sound.

From jazz to funk to pop to metal, the IN-UNF faithfully served back whatever I gave it without playing favourites, thanks in no small part to a particularly smooth midrange that neither flatters nor ruins source material. Trebles felt mildly under-represented to me, perhaps because my daily monitors are comparatively toppy, so the 2dB high shelf boost worked a treat. The textile dome tweeters have a sweet sound that’s a far cry from the piercing counterparts of other studio monitors in this price range. And the sub is really just a joy to mix with. Never obtrusive or overstated, it’s perfectly voiced for a small space and amazingly manages to maintain clean and tight low end even while sitting flat on a desk.

I also found the IN-UNF easy to monitor through for long periods. That may have something to do with the fact I didn’t feel a need to crank the speakers up in order to adequately hear a mix, and I’m sure the lower monitoring levels combined with the gentle trebles contribute to the lack of listening fatigue.

FIELD GOAL

Being my first encounter with ultra nearfield monitoring, the Kali Audio IN-UNF has sold me on the concept. Placing a large pair of monitors at its optimal distance from the listening position might be impossible in a small room. The IN-UNF solves this problem, yet without making sonic compromises. The inclusion of the subwoofer is what allows the IN-UNF to compete with (or replace) a pair of traditional nearfields, letting you rest assured the full frequency spectrum is adequately covered, and it certainly sounds good enough to take seriously as a studio monitor.

If you’re in a situation where bigger studio monitors would be overkill for your mixing environment but you don’t want to switch exclusively to headphones, the IN-UNF could be the perfect choice. Just remember to allow for a brief adjustment period.

It’s genuinely impressive how, in a few short years, Røde Microphones has cemented its place in the podcasting world. The ever-growing catalogue of products made on Australian soil can be spotted in consumer broadcasting, gaming and live streaming settings across the globe. Such widespread success doesn’t happen by accident. Røde’s product offerings meet specific needs with precision; they’re priced competitively; and, importantly, they sound good.

The PodMic is no exception. Released in December 2018, PodMic was pitched as the perfect companion for the RødeCaster Pro which hit the market only a month earlier.

Nearly five years later Røde has decided to give the PodMic a little more attention and perhaps widen its appeal, and now we have the PodMic USB. Which is, you guessed it, a PodMic with USB connectivity. But along with built-in converters and a USB socket comes a few extra goodies worth talking about.

HEAVYWEIGHT

PodMic USB is built the same as its analogue sibling except for the blacked out paint job. If the weight of a mic reassures you of quality, then PodMic USB will alleviate all your fears — at 900g, it’s a darn heavy microphone for its size. Included with the mic is a cup-shaped pop filter which slides over the top of the grille. While it makes the mic much bulkier, it produces a noticeable reduction in plosives and will doubtless be appreciated by podcasters.

Around the back is a USB-C connector, a 3.5mm headphone output, and a brass dial with detents to control headphone level. A small status LED shows when PodMic USB is connected. Notably, PodMic USB retains the XLR output. This allows you to use PodMic with pro audio gear, be it a mixer, interface, external preamp, or something like a RødeCaster Pro.

Gaining up the capsule is Røde’s Revolution preamp also used in the RødeCaster Pro 2. Control of the preamp is through the Røde Central application. I don’t have generally high expectations of built-in USB mic preamps but I dare say the PodMic USB surpassed my expectations, producing a full and rich tone without the cardboard-y flatness of other USB mics that have come across my desk. Maxing the gain out at 63dB kept my recording impressively clean with minimal noise.

IN THE BOX

The tone of the PodMic USB on its own is entirely usable but fairly bland. There’s a presence push in the high mids for vocal clarity but I don’t consider it a particularly polished sound right off the bat. But fear not, the extra DSP processing offers all you need to embellish PodMic USB’s sound into something you can be proud of.

Røde Central gives you full control over the ‘VoxLab’ GUI. You’re first greeted by the three utilitarian Depth, Sparkle, and Punch knobs which affect bass, treble and compression, respectively. Click ‘Advanced’ for the nitty gritty. Curiously, the HPF is locked to 60Hz with no higher frequency options — in a spoken word situation I’d rather a HPF be closer to 120Hz for a worthwhile reduction in plosives. There’s the Exciter section, which includes Aphex’s Big Bottom and Aural Exciter, to quickly and effectively add zest and presence. I found PodMic USB responds favourably to the full Aphex treatment with accentuated lows and highs. A De-esser would be a welcome addition to the processing suite, as anything more than gentle compression can pronounce sibilance. The Compressor and Noise Gate both do their job well and offer sufficient control to put discerning users at ease.

PodMic USB retains the XLR connectivity of the original while adding a USB output, a respectable amount of DSP, compatibility with numerous Røde applications for computers or iOS devices, and a pop filter. It’s about as versatile a microphone as any podcaster could wish for.

THE RØDE ECOSYSTEM

Aside from using Røde Central to control your mic, Røde has a growing library of software designed for its USB microphone products. Røde Connect allows multitrack recording on a computer with up to four Rode USB-capable microphones. Unify is a virtual mixing application ideal for gaming and streaming. For iOS users, the Røde Capture app lets you control and record using Rode microphones. Now that PodMic is USB-capable, it plays nice with all these applications. And with all being available as free downloads, this turns into a significant value add.

Essentially, if there’s even a slight chance you might use the PodMic with a computer, smartphone or tablet, you’re better off spending the extra A$150 to acquire a PodMic USB. You’re given a load of digital connectivity and processing options without losing the XLR-equipped purity of the original. Win/win.
