Beyerdynamic’s new Fox USB-C microphone range was introduced at the NAMM 2018 show in LA. Combining a microphone, preamp, AD converter and headphone amplifier, the new model is designed for recording both in the studio and on-the-go.

The large-diaphragm condenser microphone is designed to provide high sensitivity, while the cardioid polar pattern maintains a directional pickup pattern to keep background noise like computer fans to a minimum. The elastic suspension on the microphone capsule aims to prevent structure-borne noise, such as footsteps and fret noises.

A button on the back of the microphone regulates the gain and enables use of the Fox for especially loud sources, while a mute button makes it easy to cut unwanted sounds during live online transmissions. Beyerdynamic supplies the Fox with a range of accessories for immediate use. A pop shield prevents disruptive popping noises when talking, a base allows you to position the microphone on a table or lectern, and a clamp lets you mount it to a microphone stand. Fox comes with an orange USB cable and a thread adapter. Mobile devices from iOS and Android are supported as well.

After listening to Beyerdynamic’s DT1990 Pros I’ve realised I haven’t found the point where you’re paying too much for a pair of headphones. At $1159, these feel like a bargain.

These open backed cans are seriously revealing, like peering through the looking glass with a pair of binoculars. I’ve got a variety of headphones lying around, but I knew I’d stumbled behind the veil into a secret garden of detail as soon as I put the Beyer cans on.

Like most open-back, circumaural headphones, you get a wider sense of space than with closed backs. The Beyers are no different in that regard, but it’s how things separate out across that space that seemed relevant, most of which came down to high end detail. Down at the bass end, you can actually change the response with two alternative sets of velour ear pads with different numbers of perforations around the rim — one is dubbed ‘Analytical’, the other ‘Balanced’. Basically, it’s options A and B, where B really stands for ‘more bass’. They ship with the B option installed, but A is more suited to professional use. It’s still got plenty of balls when you load up an 808, and the transient details of kicks and snares are rendered precisely. As far as bass weighting goes in this mode, when I slapped a pair of Audio-Technica ATH-M50s back on I felt like I was ‘in da club’ . The pads aren’t difficult to change, there’s a little notch in the cup that lets you rotate them around the 45mm driver housings with one full turn.

The mid range is clear and present, though not overstated, and the highs are where the money is. I’ve been playing with Eventide’s new structural effects plug-in, Fission. It allows you to split a sound into its transient and tonal details. The Beyers really excelled at zooming in to help set the precise crossover point where the transient decay sounded most natural. After processing it with a very short delay, I could still hear the delay’s effect without straining when balancing it with the tonal portion’s processing. On other cans — like the cheaper, but still open-backed Audio-Technica R70x — the detail of that delay was harder to hear.

You won’t have to listen to these cans loud to get all the details. In fact, you shouldn’t. A side effect of having such detailed and forward high end is it will force you to keep the volume low. Keeping level low is good for listening over a long period anyway, so you’ll be thanking Beyer for that. The cans are very comfortable, but like all Beyers cans, there’s a downside to incorporating high quality metal construction; weight. The first real headphones I ever had were the DT770 Pro closed backs. I eventually moved onto Audio-Technica M50s, because they were cheaper and lighter, which made them easier to have on your head during a day of tracking. While these aren’t the heaviest cans, you will feel them start to sink into your head when compared to plastic ones.

Beyer does everything to offset that weight by installing a plush headband and the velour pads. I have found that I get a bit sweaty on a hot day with these pads — something to keep in mind if you’re similarly prone.

The rest of the packaging matches Beyer’s high-quality construction. You get a moulded carry case that houses every component, including the second set of ear pads, and an optional three metre-long straight cable housed in an internal pouch if you don’t like the coiled one. Both are gold-plated detachable cables, via a 3-pin mini-XLR jack that clips into the headphone housing, and each have screw-on 6.5mm jacks.

These are amazing sounding headphones that will reveal loads of detail you may never have heard before. And, as with the DT770 Pros — which my dad still uses — these Beyer cans will be around for decades. Worth the investment.

Beyerdynamic has introduced the TG 500 wireless microphone system designed for live and install applications. With its five sets, the TG 500 is an all-rounder with a package for every need. The vocal set comes with either the dynamic TG V50 handheld transmitter that’s ideal for singing and performance, or the TG V56 condenser handheld transmitter that’s more suited for presentations. The TG L58 lavalier microphone allows unobtrusive positioning of the mic that’s perfect for lecture presenters. The ideal companion for theatre productions is the headworn set with the TG H34 headset microphone. The instrument set with included WA-CGI instrumental cable is ideal for professional miking of guitar and bass.

The TG 500 series comes with a 19-inch rack mount kit in which you can mount two 9.5-inch single receivers side by side. If you want to use multiple channels, a dual receiver with integrated antenna splitter is also available. The TG 500 system will make its premiere during the NAMM 2017 show in Anaheim, California.

Wireless headphones aren’t the most common piece of kit in the home recordist’s arsenal but by gum they’re handy when you have a pair. A friend who had a couple of similar pairs for composing in his tiny Bondi Beach flat first introduced me to this concept years ago. Being a unit comprised mostly of shonky floorboards, asbestos and decaying render-work, one could hardly crank up the main monitors after hours, so headphones were the only option. A couple of pairs of wireless cans made late night composing a tenable scenario – plus there were no cables to trip over on overly humid, beer-soaked sessions. A number of wireless headphones have hit the market recently; including these little numbers from Beyerdynamic… must be something in the air.

The RSX 700 headphones use the 2.4GHz spectrum and provide wireless listening at distances up to 20 metres before fidelity begins to degrade. The cans are quite light at 290 grams and the cups are an enclosed design that manage to blot out a good degree of extraneous outside noise. They’re reasonably comfortable, without clamping onto your head like some kind of bi-valve mollusc.

The RSX 700s use a tiny (95 x 72 x 15mm) transmitter unit that doubles as a charger for the two supplied AAA NiMH batteries housed within the left-hand cup. The transmitter houses a single button for swapping between channels while a large LED display lets you know the channel number in use. Controls on the actual headphones include a channel select button and two volume control buttons – plus and minus – astoundingly simple to use. All cables are provided for hooking the cans up to either mini-jack or RCA audio outputs, and a 1/8-to-1/4-inch adaptor is also provided.

In use, the 700s sound fine – no buzzing or hissing as I moved about the room, nor when wandering past the office’s wireless router or cordless phones. Audio did, however, cut out completely if I sat my mobile on top of the transmitter – a silly move really. Overall? A nifty set of cans.
