Cadac is celebrating its 50th anniversary with two new launches in its CDC touch-screen digital mixing console series: the top of the range CDC seven-s and the CDC five; a highly compact, all-in-one mix solution for small-to-medium sized production companies, freelance mix engineers and all manner of fixed sound installations.

The CDC five features a single touchscreen and 16 faders, with dual banks of user assignable buttons (40 in total) — a unique feature of the CDC five. The CDC ‘human interface’ and feature set combine in aiding the workflow and allowing the engineer full creative freedom, unhindered by operation of the technology. The 23.5-inch touchscreen displays the intuitive ‘high agility’ CDC swipe-able user interface with its instinctive use of gesture operation in navigating and operating the console.

The rear panel boasts 16 analogue inputs, to compliment eight analogue outputs and eight digital I/Os, as well as an integrated 64 x 64 Waves card. The CDC five also includes dual MegaCOMMS ports, enabling additional MegaCOMMS processing/interfaces to be connected, forming an extended audio and mixing console network. CDC five runs 96k / 24-bit audio and is capable providing up to 48 inputs and 24 assignable busses, plus LCR and monitors in FoH mode; or 30 assignable busses when operating in Monitor Mode.

With the launch of the CDC five, comes Version 5 CDC Console Software, which features an improved Graphical User Interface with a completely redesigned console control screen. The new software also boasts a number of new features – including Cue Ripple and Cue Preview – and performance enhancements that feature across the entire CDC range.

Cadac’s CDC Offline Editor mirrors the CDC six and CDC eight consoles’ operating software with an identical graphic user interface enabling full functionality within a Mac-based software package. You can edit and save all key operating parameters, making it a useful preparatory tool for the creation of pre-existing show files, which can be uploaded or downloaded from the consoles via a USB key. Offline Editor is expected to be launched in the third quarter of the year.

Cadac has also added AES3 and optical connectivity and user definable routing to the MegaCOMMS audio network. On top of that, two new hardware components have been announced — the MC Optical Bridge and the MC AES3 Stagebox. And the new CDC software V3.01 for the six and eight consoles bring a number of features and enhancements.

You couldn’t blame them for shedding a tear at Cadac. The Thessaloniki Concert Hall in Greece has recently installed the last ever Cadac R-type console to be manufactured, and a long-term Cadac employee saw the project as a cue to put his feet up and retire. Cadac is acknowledging the market dominance of digital consoles and at the same time sticking to its analogue guns by continuing with its other professional large-format analogue audio consoles. This includes the 256-input J-type through the modular S-type and the latest compact LIVE1. But back to the Thessaloniki – the bespoke console is configured with 48 mono and three stereo input channels, 16 dual groups, one monitor group, 16 DC masters and one VCA master. Many of Cadac’s longest serving engineers worked on the build of the console, including Final Test Engineer Tony Waldren, for who this was the final project before retiring after almost 30 years with the company. It’s interesting to hear that Cadac explains that sourcing components for these consoles is getting difficult these days. Let’s hope they don’t disappear too quickly.

Cadac has signed an agreement with Waves Audio to license Waves SoundGrid technology. The two companies want to develop an interface between Cadac’s own Megacomms networking technology and Waves’ SoundGrid and plug-in products with the intention to give Cadac users access to Waves MultiRack plug-ins, which can then be incorporated with the console’s built-in processing options. Cadac’s Megacomms is an advanced audio networking technology that provides for greatly improved bandwidth and performance in a digital audio networking protocol. The technology currently supports transmission of 192 channels of 96kHz 24bit audio down a single cable, with superior latency, at distances of up to 150 metres. Future development will see capacity expanded to 256 channels. The agreement with Waves Audio is another key element in a development program that will provide Megacomms interface solutions for all current industry standard networking and transmission protocols.
