Developed by Celemony in cooperation with Presonus Software, ARA was conceived as a new standard to complement existing plug-in interfaces such as VST and Audio Unit. The objective was to make it possible for DAWs and plug-ins to exchange information of a musical nature, regarding such things as notes, chords and tempos. The protocol was also intended, however, to afford access to the audio files used in the project, making the often tedious transfer procedures required by some plug-in architectures redundant. The closer integration achieved through ARA makes numerous new functions and workflow improvements possible that are especially useful when arranging or comping.

The seamless interaction between Melodyne and Studio One as well as the new workflows were enthusiastically received. Other manufacturers – on both the DAW and the plug-in side – were also soon supporting ARA, because ARA was designed from the start so that not only Melodyne but also other plug-ins could benefit from it.

ARA Audio Random Access offers a multitude of possibilities. Which of them are taken advantage of in any given implementation depends upon the technical context and the product strategy of the manufacturer concerned. ARA support is to be found in one form or another today in most of the leading DAWs, including Pro Tools, Logic Pro, Cubase, Studio One, Cakewalk, Nuendo, Samplitude, Sequoia, Mixcraft, Reaper, Sound Forge, Acid and Waveform. In addition to Melodyne itself, ARA support on the plug-in side is currently offered by Steinberg’s SpectraLayers, as well as Antares, Izotope and Syncro Arts, with SoundRadix set to join them in the near future.

Right now, the fully revised and expanded ARA Audio Random Access Software Development Kit is available under the Apache 2.0 license, which also makes integration into projects with open-source licenses such as GNU GPLv3 possible. Interested developers can take advantage – free from licensing costs – of the full range of the ARA specification 2.0, which also covers more recent ARA features such as chord tracks, expanded copy & paste support, optimised routing and improved comping and editing.

The SDK allows seamless integration with popular development tools such as Git and Cmake. It includes detailed documentation of the interface as well as the entire integration process and extensive library code, plus numerous code examples and options for validating the ARA implementation. Celemony is accompanying this with an open-source example of ARA integration into the JUCE framework, currently one of the audio industry’s leading development environments.

Celemony is announces the immediate availability of the new Melodyne Version 5. The Grammy-Award-winning software Melodyne is used all over the world every day for the correction, reshaping and transformation of vocal tracks, samples and audio recordings of all kinds.

The most important new features of Version 5 relate to Melodyne’s core competence: the correction of poor intonation on vocal tracks. The algorithm now detects – along with a host of other phenomena – the presence and extent of the unpitched (noise-like) components of the vocal sound as well as breaths, which it then processes separately from the pitched components. This leads to better results, less time spent editing, and a more natural sound.

The volume balance between the pitched and unpitched components can be adjusted – syllable by syllable if desired. This not only helps with double-tracking and vocal harmonies but gives you a precisely targeted de-esser into the bargain.

Totally new possibilities for dynamic contouring are afforded also by the Fade Tool and the Leveling Macro, as they too work on a per-note basis – even with polyphonic audio material.

A new degree of musical freedom

But Melodyne 5 also supports new workflows that further musical creativity: With the Chord Track (and the Pitch Grid configured accordingly), recordings and samples can be adapted at lightning speed to the harmonic structure and chords of your own compositions and songs. So any library sample now harmonises instantly with your song. That’s perfect for songwriters but also for remixers. And thanks to the integrated chord recognition, no knowledge of music theory is required.

The most important new features of Melodyne 5 in a nutshell:

with the Melodic algorithm, separate editing of pitched and unpitched components of the vocal sound (sibilant detection). Better results, less time spent editing, more natural sound

the ability to control the volume ratio between the pitched and unpitched components – a precisely targeted de-esser function

improved weighting of pitch deviations, musically perfect intonation

a Chord Track and Chord Grid to adapt any recordings and samples to your song – thanks to integrated chord recognition, no knowledge of music theory required

the Fade Tool and Leveling Macro let you edit the dynamics of each note – even in polyphonic material

a new algorithm, “Percussive Pitched”, plus various other algorithm enhancements

fuller implementation of keyboard shortcuts

Melodyne 5 runs in stand-alone mode as well as with 64-bit DAWs under MacOS and Windows – DAW integration via ARA, VST3, AU or AAX. The update costs 49 €/US$ for Melodyne assistant, 99 €/US$ for Melodyne editor and 149 €/US$ for Melodyne studio.

For Melodyne essential and users who registered Melodyne after 1 March 2020, it is free of charge. A 30-day trial version can be downloaded from www.celemony.com/en/trial

DNA Direct Note Access made the impossible possible by allowing individual notes in polyphonic material to be identified and edited. The unique access that Melodyne offered to the pitch, timing, duration and other parameters of notes in monophonic material was extended through DNA Direct Note Access to include notes forming part of chords. Like Melodyne itself, DNA Direct Note Access was a development that radically changed the handling of audio. Melodyne with DNA Direct Note Access allowed intervention in the audio material in ways that were unthinkable before and that range from subtle enhancements to total re-composition.

The presentation of DNA Direct Note Access early in 2008 was the highlight of the Musikmesse in Frankfurt and was met with an enthusiastic response from musicians, industry insiders and journalists alike. But integrating the new technology took time. A great deal of time. So much time, in fact, that some users began to suspect it had all been a hoax and that Peter Neubäcker had absconded to the South Seas with his invention and his laurels. Far from it. It’s just that the solid implementation of pioneering new technology in a software product does take a great deal of time. Finally, after a public beta test in the course of the summer, Melodyne editor 1.0 with DNA Direct Note Access was released in November 2009.

Today, ten years on, Melodyne editor is available in the further developed and improved Version 4. DNA and the editing of individual notes in polyphonic audio material remain to this day a unique feature of Melodyne.

Capstan, Celemony’s software solution for the removal of wow and flutter, has received an update to Version 1.2 that now lets it operate in higher resolution.

With the free update, Capstan offers an optional High-Resolution Mode that increases the resolution of the audio analysis fourfold, meaning flutter frequencies up to 14 Hz to be eliminated, while of course further increasing the accuracy of the processing.

Capstan is based on Celemony’s patented DNA Direct Note Access technology that enables detection of wow and flutter from the music itself – regardless of the medium (magnetic tape, vinyl, etc). The software is used by classic labels and mastering and restoration studios, broadcasters and archivists, making its mark through the rescuing of valuable historical recordings.

Capstan can be used for only US $199 for five days, while a permanent license costs US $4,458.
