Drawmer has expanded its compression offerings with the new Drawmer 1970 Dual FET Compressor and Pre-Amp. Engineers will notice the similarity of the 1970’s layout to the company’s flagship 1960 Mic Pre & Vacuum Tube Compressor, and it is destined to fit a similar role in applications where transparent preamps and punchy FET compression fit the bill.

Ivor Drawmer and his team of engineers combined the best of old and new analog technologies via lessons learned across decades of innovation to make the 1970 tremendously flexible and unfailingly musical in a modern digital workflow. Like its siblings, the Drawmer 1970 is designed and handmade by Drawmer in the UK using a rugged steel chassis and an aluminium front panel.

Like the 1960, the Drawmer 1970 Dual FET Compressor and Pre-Amp features two channels of preamplification and compression that can operate independently or in true stereo-link mode. The 66dB pre-amps are built around the latest THAT Corporation technology and are incredibly clean and transparent. In addition to phantom power, the preamps offer matched impedance for unpowered microphones at 200, 600, and 2400 ohms. Like the 1960, the 1970 offers an instrument-level direct input with gain, boost, and newly-engineered bass and treble adjustments. Users select from among the mic preamps, line-level inputs, and instrument-level input as the sources for the compressors, with phase-reverse and a high-pass filter for even greater flexibility. The compressor section includes fine control over threshold, ratio, attack, and release, and the 1970 incorporates “BIG” and “AIR” processing to enhance deep lows and sparkling highs, respectively. The output section includes wet/dry mix, make-up gain, bypass, and a pair of analog VU meters.

“The Drawmer 1970 Dual FET Compressor and Pre-Amp is designed and built to be a reliable workhorse that imprints its analog magic on any signal,” said Brad Lunde, president of TransAudio Group. “Whereas the 1960 has a ‘tube’ sound on both the preamps and the compressors, the 1970 has transparent preamps and a punchy ‘FET’ sound on the compressors. Users will find a huge range of applications for the 1970, including bass and other DI instruments, preamplification and compression of vocals and other instruments, and line-level compression for individual channels during mixdown or, with the stereo link on, stereo compression of the master bus or stems.”

The Drawmer 1970 is now available in USA at a MAP price of $1,497

On its website Drawmer goes to some lengths to explain how multiband compressors work, and why anyone should want one. Don’t worry, most of us have been fiddling for 10 years with plug-in varieties of multiband comps and already have a rough idea, and just looking at this Drawmer 1973 might be all the excuse you need to reach for the wallet. The Drawmer 1973 is a stereo, three band FET compressor that owes some of its pedigree to Drawmer’s S3,1960 and 1968 models. It also includes more than a few features that we’re used to seeing in the virtual world such as a Mute/Bypass switch on each band and a variable crossover point on either side of the midrange section. The low band has a “Big” switch for enhancing bottom end and likewise the high band has an “Air” switch. Output stage offers a wet/dry mix and a make-up gain control. The entire unit can be bypassed and the two VU meters should keep you occupied for hours. At a guess, the Drawmer 1973 will sell in bucketloads. Full specs and that lesson on multiband compressors are on www.drawmer.com

Drawmer’s new active MC2.1 three-way monitor controller is designed to be as electronically transparent as possible, with an ultra-low-noise specification and built-in low-hum switchable linear power supply. There are four inputs and up to three pairs of stereo speakers, plus a mono subwoofer, may be connected and active at any one time in any combination, making it suitable for A/B mix or monitor comparisons. Level trims for each individual channel ensure that any output discrepancies in the connected speakers can be compensated for, and two headphone amplifiers and a talkback microphone, all with individual level controls, are also built in. The two main inputs, and all of the balanced stereo outputs, are high-grade Neutrik XLR connectors. Input 2 is a ‘Combi’ XLR/jack, whilst the Aux input is via left/right phono connectors or a stereo 3.5mm jack, allowing the easy connection of sub-mixers, laptops, record decks or other audio sources. Front panel switches can individually activate and deactivate the connected audio sources and output speaker pairs. Phase Reverse and Mono summing buttons are also included. Finally the unit has timed relay protection on all speaker outputs. See www.drawmer.com for full specs.
