Royer ribbons and the MA-1000 from Royer Labs’ sister company, Mojave Audio, are well known throughout high-end studio communities the world over. And this summer, the audible results of these microphones’ prowess was, once again, heard in the recently released Disney film The Lion King. Grammy Award winning engineer/mixer/producer Alan Meyerson, who has recorded and/or mixed close to 300 films in addition to roughly 150 records prior to his film career, captured much of the film’s audio. And at the heart of Meyerson’s involvement with The Lion King was a substantial number of Royer R-122Vs and Mojave MA-1000s.

Meyerson’s work is well known. The World War II drama Dunkirk, the animated hit Big Hero 6, and the acclaimed Wonder Woman are prime examples of his accomplishments.

“The Royer 122Vs captured the sound of my woodwinds,” Meyerson explained. “There is a motif in the movie involving eight low woodwinds. four bass clarinets, and four contra bassoons. I wanted a unique sound for them and chose to mic them with the R-122Vs. These mics did a spectacular job of helping me dig out the grit on the low woods, which were used for the sound of the film’s bad guy, Scar.”

On the Mojave side of the equation,” he continued, “the MA-1000s were my overall choice for capturing the orchestral brass. These mics have a very clear and natural manner that results in the brass having a wonderfully articulate sound. The combination of the Royer and Mojave microphones made it easy to capture the depth and musicality of the performances.”

When queried about those Royer R-122V attributes that made these microphones so well-suited for The Lion King project, Meyerson offered the following thoughts. “When the Royers are on the woodwinds, which are behind the strings in the centre of the orchestra, I can position them sideways. This enables me to use the null of the microphone’s figure-8 pattern to attenuate the sound of the strings in the balance. The result is very effective.”

With the caliber of projects that Alan Meyerson is involved with, the ability to get questions answered competently and in timely fashion is crucial. In this regard, he rates Royer Labs’ customer and technical support services best in class. “I’ve been part of the Royer family since the movie Thin Red Line,” he said. “The Royer and Mojave crew are some of the best people in professional audio. If I have a problem, they take care of me immediately. I really couldn’t ask for more.”

The Lion King was released on July 19th. With his involvement in the film now in the rear-view mirror, Meyerson summarised his experience with his Royer microphones, “Royer mics have changed the way I record. They’ve changed what I listen for and they’ve expanded the size of my sonic palette. I honestly can’t imagine doing this type of work without them. Royer ribbons not only enable me to capture performances or sounds with exacting detail, they open an entire world of recording possibilities that simply did not exist previously. You just can’t go wrong with Royer mics.”

For more on Alan Meyerson, read here about his work on the recent Jumanji & Thor: Ragnarok: www.audiotechnology.com/issues/issue-58/scoring-big

Mojave Audio has announced its new MA-50 large-diaphragm transformerless condenser microphone designed for clarity and realism.

The microphone’s fast transient response and its ability to handle high SPLs (up to 140dB) make the MA-50 a versatile model. Utilising the same 3-micron capsule as in the acclaimed MA-200 and MA-201fet mics, it is well suited to capturing vocal performances, voiceovers, acoustic instruments, as well as percussion instruments and drums.

The new MA-50 has a fixed-cardioid polar pattern design. The microphone incorporates a 3-micron capsule, employs transformerless circuitry that results in an extremely low noise floor. The MA-50 offers a basic yet elegant design that makes it ideally suited for use in both professional and home studio environments.

Dusty Wakeman, President of Mojave Audio, commented on the company’s new MA-50 Large-Diaphragm Transformerless Condenser Microphone, “The new MA-50 is an incredibly versatile mic that continues the company’s new design aesthetic as premiered by our recently introduced MA-1000. I genuinely believe the combination of features and affordability will make the MA-50 one of our most popular microphones going forward.”

The Mojave Audio MA-50 carries an MSRP of $495 US and ships with a shock mount.

Mojave Audio introduces its new MA-1000 large-diaphragm multi-pattern tube condenser microphone, the first model in the company’s new Signature Series line of products. Designed by David Royer, known for his work with ribbon microphones, the MA-1000 features an original new old-stock 5840 tube, a 251-style capsule, and a custom-designed transformer built by Coast Magnetics. The MA-1000 offers a 15dB pad, low frequency roll-off and a remotely controlled, continuously variable polar pattern selector located on microphone’s power supply. With high-quality components, the MA-1000 is designed to deliver an airy top end, realism in the mids, and an accurate yet authoritative bottom end.

Dusty Wakeman, President of Mojave Audio, commented on the company’s new MA-1000 Large-diaphragm Multi-pattern Tube Condenser Microphone, “The MA-1000 is a versatile, high-end microphone designed specifically to address the most challenging studio recording applications. The mic’s switchable 15dB pad enables one to address of variety of high SPL challenges while the low frequency roll-off capability makes it a tremendous microphone for both vocal and voiceover projects. Cosmetically, as the first offering in Mojave Audio’s new Signature Series product line, this mic represents a step forward compared to Mojave’s traditional ‘working class’ designs. I have every confidence this microphone will be well-received by engineers and artists from a wide range of musical disciplines.”

The Mojave Audio MA-1000 carries an MSRP of $2,995 US and will become available the fourth quarter of 2015. The microphone ships with a new shock mount design created by and licensed from sibling company Royer Labs.
