The Will Gregory Moog Ensemble Performs with 10 Minimoogs
In collaboration with Moog Music, the Will Gregory Moog Ensemble presents ‘Archimedes Screw’. This is a live performance from 10 musicians, each using their own Model D to add layers of sound to the composition as it builds. From the onset of the video the stage is set with a mix of vintage and modern Minimoogs lining the chancel of the historic Mount Without chapel in Bristol, UK. The acoustics of the space provide a warm depth to the sound of Minimoogs produced from every era they have been manufactured.

Utilising MIDI integration for the 2016 and 2022 reissues, and MIDI-to-CV converters for the vintage units involved in this performance, the Moog Ensemble highlights the modern features alongside the classic sound. According to the group’s musical director and composer, Will Gregory, the instrument’s enhancements expand Model D’s realm of sonic possibility.

Gregory says, “The MIDI aspect of these instruments enables us to open polyrhythmic possibilities between the 10 parts that would be beyond humans to reproduce otherwise. Our hands become free for sound sculpting as we perform by manipulating the filter, resonance, modulation, and envelope controls in pairs. Both these aspects are very important to how I see the Moog Ensemble breaking new ground in live performance and simultaneously giving a more expressive and warm creation.”

Moog’s Focus On Making Its Instruments More Accessible

The company’s foray into the software space began just over a decade ago with the release of Moog’s first iOS app. Its growing collection of budget-friendly applications for iOS and macOS users has made it possible for more creatives around the world to experiment with sound design and synthesis concepts.

With this announcement of the new Moogerfooger Effects Plug-ins — now available for both Apple and Windows — the team at Moog takes a giant leap forward in its mission to make professional-level audio production tools more accessible for the artist community. Steve Dunnington, the company’s current VP of Engineering and former apprentice of Bob Moog, shares more on this evolution and the importance of paying tribute to Moog’s heritage.

“Bob liked to describe himself as a toolmaker for musicians,” Steve recalls. “He felt that technology should not drive the needs of musicians, but that engineers and toolmakers should use the needs of musicians to harness the power of technologies that serve those needs. He was never dogmatic about whether analog or digital was better; he saw both technologies as different means to serve the musicians that he respected and admired.”

The Moog veteran of 28 years and counting has worked on the development of dozens of hardware and software instruments, including both the classic analog Moogerfoogers and new plug-in emulations.

“As we began the development of the Moogerfooger Effects Plug-ins, it was of paramount importance not just to clone the devices,” Steve continues, “but to look for opportunities where digital technology could improve some of their characteristics. This is in alignment with Bob Moog’s philosophies — he was reluctant to copy his old designs but preferred to continue to refine and improve them based on the needs of musicians. Thus, the envelope follower controls on the new MF-101S become more flexible for a wider variety of program material than the original MF-101, thanks to the possibilities provided by digital technology. Other examples abound in the Moogerfooger Effects Plug-ins, where inspiration was taken from the original with the addition of useful improvements. Ty Segall Creates Original Song With Moogerfooger Effects Plug-Ins, Vintage Minimoog Model D & More

In a new video from Moog Music, Ty Segall invites you inside Harmonizer Studio, home to his wonderland of custom and vintage instruments. Witness the musician and producer’s creative process as he builds an original composition piece by piece using guitar, bass, electric piano, synthesizer, a mix of percussion, and Moog’s new software effects plug-ins.

Moog has just unleashed the diminutive Mavis, a low cost DIY synth that promises to deliver the famous Moog sound while also showing the old dog isn’t afraid of some new tricks. 

That’s good news on multiple levels, and the best news of all is that despite the Mavis being billed as DIY, you won’t need to break out the soldering iron or multimeter. It’s just a simple matter of lining up a neat PCB, tightening a few screws and connecting some plugs. In fact, the most time consuming aspect of turning the Mavis into a usable synth is making sure that the 24 patchpoint sleeves are properly secured. And even that’s not too taxing, considering that these patch points are really what brings the Mavis to life.

GRINDY, SQUELCHY, TINY

Opening the Mavis package, you realise Moog has set out to make an affordable synth, not a cheap synth. The difference is evident by the level of thought gone into the package: power adapter with region adapters, colourful and clear build instructions, some handy patch overlay cards, some patch cables and a Decksaver-esque cover to keep things dust free. And most importantly, there are plenty of Moog stickers also included in the box (something that always manages to impress the inner-child in me, however irrational that may be)!

Stylistically, Mavis presents as a hybrid between the Mother 32 and the now discontinued Werkstatt-01; it’s not as fully featured as the more expensive Mother 32 but it’s more refined than the similarly priced Werkstatt-01, with a far more sophisticated patching system and better build quality overall.

While the Mavis doesn’t feature a sequencer like it’s big sister, the Mother 32, it’s not a huge loss as the Mother 32 never quite managed to impress with its sequencer capabilities. It does however have very similar mini-keys to the Mother 32, which are surprisingly useful when auditioning sounds or tapping out notes. 

Luckily, for those of us blessed with sausage fingers, it will happily accept CV input for gate and pitch, and plugging it into a MIDI controller like an Arturia Keystep 37 (which has CV outputs), turned it into a ‘traditional’ monophonic synth that put out some great, classic Moog sound: grindy bass tones and squelchy resonant highs are all easy to coax from the tiny little Mavis, with the familiar ladder filter doing what it’s famous for, even if the cutoff knob is tiny. 

If you’re not inclined to play notes from the keyboard or don’t have a controller handy, flicking the VCA Mode knob turns the Mavis into continuous ‘drone mode’ which allows for some fun gating options and can be handy for designing sounds.

This is Moog’s most complete, budget friendly synthesizer to date, yet still packed with new innovations and the legendary sound you expect from Moog. It is a synth that is suitable for beginners and masters — a solid ‘onramp’ to the world of synthesizers and Eurorack, or a robust addition to any existing set up. ​ Most importantly, Mavis inspires tactile interaction and creativity — no matter where you are on your music-making journey.
