Royer Labs opened in 1998 and shortly after released the world’s first phantom powered, active ribbon microphone, the R-122. A revolutionary development in ribbon mics, it combined impedance matching circuitry with condenser-like output levels that enabled the microphone to be used on even the quietest sound sources. In 2016, the updated R-122 MKll was given a high-pass filter and -15 dB pad, making it Royer’s single most versatile ribbon microphone.

In celebration of its 25th Anniversary, Royer Labs debuts the Limited Edition R-122 MKII Distressed Rose Anniversary Edition. The Distressed Rose plating gives a variety of looks, from a dark bourbon colour in lower studio lighting and onstage to a rich rose colour in brighter light. The 25th Anniversary R-122 MKII is 100% original — except for this once-in-a-lifetime 25th Anniversary finish. Only eighty models will be built, in singles and matched pairs.

The R-122 MKII is recommended for drum overheads and rooms, electric and acoustic guitars, brass, piano, violin, cello, ukulele, and any other acoustic stringed instrument, percussion, vocals, and countless other applications. When less low-end or proximity effect is desired, the high pass switch is perfectly balanced, set at 100 Hz and rolling off 6dB per octave. On high SPL applications like electric guitars and brass, the 15dB pad lowers the R-122 MKII output, helping to maintain a clean signal path.

John Jennings, Royer Labs’ Vice President of Sales and Marketing, commented on the company’s new 25th Anniversary ribbon microphone, “We’re enjoying finding ways to let the pro audio community in on our 25th anniversary celebration. The R-122 MKll is an amazingly versatile microphone and looks so classy and unique in the Distressed Rose finish. We’re proud to release this one!”

Visit the Royer Labs website to learn more about the 25th Anniversary Limited Edition R-122 MKII Distressed Rose ribbon microphone.

To kick off its 25th anniversary celebration, Royer Labs announces the R-10 ‘Hot Rod’ 25th Anniversary microphone — a passive, mono ribbon microphone that is designed for use in studios and live on stage. The limited-edition R-10 ‘Hot Rod’ is fitted with a custom Anniversary Edition transformer; has 5dB hotter output than the standard R-10 with a punchier, more open sound characteristic; and comes with a 25th Anniversary trim package that sets it apart from the standard R-10.

Like the original R-10, the R-10 ‘Hot Rod’ handles extremely high SPLs of 160dB @1kHz. Similarly, it has an internally shock-mounted ribbon transducer and 3-layer wind screen system — both combining to give the ribbon element excellent protection and make it an easy choice for live work; features lowered proximity effect that makes it an excellent choice for close miking instruments and singers; and carries a 5-year warranty with the first re-ribbon free.

The R-10 Hot Rod’s patented offset-ribbon design positions the ribbon element toward the front of the transducer, which allows for high SPL handling on the front, logo side, and the option of a brighter response when recording lower SPL sound sources like acoustic guitar, ukulele and vocals on the backside — three feet or closer, in the phase reversed position.

John Jennings, Royer Labs’ Vice President of Sales and Marketing, commented on the new 25th Anniversary microphone, “Royer Labs is thrilled to be in our 25th year, and kicking it off with the R-10 Hot Rod is just pure fun. The guys in our shop cooked this version of the R-10 up and we’re all into it, with its cool looking trim package and its different sonic personality. It expands on the R-10 in interesting ways, creating a different flavor of R-10 that we think recording engineers and FOH engineers will really like.”

The Royer 140-NM is precision manufactured using six neodymium magnets arranged in a ‘turret’ fashion. This design approach results in an assembly that offers greater flux density for enhanced performance of any EMT plate. The new design lowers distortion and makes the drive coil more responsive.

Designed by Rick Perrotta in partnership with Advanced Theoretical Concepts, the Royer 140-NM package includes an acrylic centring disc, mounting hardware, and a comprehensive set of instructions, along with suggested tips to help audio engineers get the most from their investment.

Rick Perrotta, President of Royer Labs, commented on the new magnet assembly, “We spent a lot of time making sure our design was not only going to serve as a replacement for the original magnet assembly, but offer improved performance as well. I’m very proud of this accomplishment.”

The 140-NM is the first product available in Royer’s Custom Shop, which was created to release products designed by Rick Perrotta and/or David Royer that fall outside of Royer’s regular pro audio offerings. Custom Shop products can be purchased from Royer’s online Custom Shop web page – https://royerlabs.com/customshop/

The Royer Labs 140-NM EMT Reverb Plate magnet assembly carries an MSRP of $799. The product is currently available from Royer Labs.

Royer ribbons and the MA-1000 from Royer Labs’ sister company, Mojave Audio, are well known throughout high-end studio communities the world over. And this summer, the audible results of these microphones’ prowess was, once again, heard in the recently released Disney film The Lion King. Grammy Award winning engineer/mixer/producer Alan Meyerson, who has recorded and/or mixed close to 300 films in addition to roughly 150 records prior to his film career, captured much of the film’s audio. And at the heart of Meyerson’s involvement with The Lion King was a substantial number of Royer R-122Vs and Mojave MA-1000s.

Meyerson’s work is well known. The World War II drama Dunkirk, the animated hit Big Hero 6, and the acclaimed Wonder Woman are prime examples of his accomplishments.

“The Royer 122Vs captured the sound of my woodwinds,” Meyerson explained. “There is a motif in the movie involving eight low woodwinds. four bass clarinets, and four contra bassoons. I wanted a unique sound for them and chose to mic them with the R-122Vs. These mics did a spectacular job of helping me dig out the grit on the low woods, which were used for the sound of the film’s bad guy, Scar.”

On the Mojave side of the equation,” he continued, “the MA-1000s were my overall choice for capturing the orchestral brass. These mics have a very clear and natural manner that results in the brass having a wonderfully articulate sound. The combination of the Royer and Mojave microphones made it easy to capture the depth and musicality of the performances.”

When queried about those Royer R-122V attributes that made these microphones so well-suited for The Lion King project, Meyerson offered the following thoughts. “When the Royers are on the woodwinds, which are behind the strings in the centre of the orchestra, I can position them sideways. This enables me to use the null of the microphone’s figure-8 pattern to attenuate the sound of the strings in the balance. The result is very effective.”

With the caliber of projects that Alan Meyerson is involved with, the ability to get questions answered competently and in timely fashion is crucial. In this regard, he rates Royer Labs’ customer and technical support services best in class. “I’ve been part of the Royer family since the movie Thin Red Line,” he said. “The Royer and Mojave crew are some of the best people in professional audio. If I have a problem, they take care of me immediately. I really couldn’t ask for more.”

The Lion King was released on July 19th. With his involvement in the film now in the rear-view mirror, Meyerson summarised his experience with his Royer microphones, “Royer mics have changed the way I record. They’ve changed what I listen for and they’ve expanded the size of my sonic palette. I honestly can’t imagine doing this type of work without them. Royer ribbons not only enable me to capture performances or sounds with exacting detail, they open an entire world of recording possibilities that simply did not exist previously. You just can’t go wrong with Royer mics.”

Royer Labs announces the AxeMount Dual Microphone Mount, the ideal solution for blending a Royer R-121 ribbon mic with a 57-styled dynamic mic. This combination of microphones has become one of the most popular methods for capturing electric guitars, and now the process is made easier than ever with the new AxeMount dual mount mic clip. Co-designed with SLR of Windsor, Ontario, Canada, the AxeMount is manufactured by SLR in Canada.

The AxeMount microphone clip positions an R-121 directly next to a 57-style dynamic microphone, with the setup phase-aligned and ready to record—resulting in the ultimate electric guitar miking package. Whether one requires small positional adjustments on a loudspeaker or the ability to easily switch both mics to a different cabinet, the new AxeMount clip makes the process as easy as moving a single mic stand. The AxeMount also accommodates Royer R-122, R-122 MKll and R-122V ribbon microphones.

The natural, full bodied sound of the Royer R-121 ribbon mic, blended to one’s preference with the fist-forward pointedness of a 57-styled dynamic microphone, facilitates phenomenal tailoring of recorded and live guitar tones. In the past, this miking process necessitated the use of two mic stands, two clips, and considerable patience to get the mics properly aligned and in-phase with each other. The new AxeMount eliminates these challenges and makes this classic miking technique easy to achieve.

John Jennings, Royer’s VP, commented on the company’s new AxeMount Dual Microphone Mount, “The AxeMount is one of those simple add-on tools that instantly makes you say, ‘Why didn’t we think of this before?’ When Martin Bak of SLR approached us with the idea, it was a no-brainer to partner on the development. This clip is rugged and easy to use and, most importantly, takes the guesswork / experimentation out of the phase alignment equation when combining a 57-style dynamic mic with a Royer R-121 ribbon mic, which is the combination for capturing all the energy and nuance of an electric guitar. The AxeMount facilitates a quick setup and it’s inexpensive and easy to use, so I think everyone interested in using the R-121 / dynamic mic method will want to have a few of these around.”
