Highlights include:

Cascading: enables users to connect two Ui24R via Ethernet to double their mixing capability by enabling a new 32×32 bi-directional audio bus between consoles. Users can easily switch between Host and Remote units with a single click on Ui24R’s HTML5 screen user interface. Common applications of this new functionality include: doubling mic inputs, by adding a second Ui24R as a submixer, routed into the main Ui24R; and utilizing two Ui24R mixers to create two fully independent mixes, each with dedicated EQ/Gate/Compression, for example when mixing FOH and monitors, or creating independent FOH and streaming/live recording mixes.

Cue Recall: Ui24R’s new Cue feature enables the saving and fast recall of mix settings. While recalling Cues, Ui24R can block any changes to routing or processor types, which enables seamless operation, an essential during low volume events, for example while mixing for theatre.

UDP Lighting Control: A new UDP view in the Ui24R HTML 5 interface adds simple buttons to send industry-standard UDP commands over Ethernet to external gear such as lighting software or hardware lighting controllers. A valuable use for this feature is to trigger pre-set lighting cues, which is perfect for community theaters, churches or corporate presentation settings where the sound engineers or volunteers might not have lighting experience.

Lexicon Reverb PreDelay: The embedded Lexicon processing in Ui24R is now enhanced with Reverb Pre-Delay, allowing users to easily set the time before first surface reflections and more quickly simulate desired acoustic environments.

Big Desktop: The new ‘Big Desktop’ INFO view adds provides a bird’s eye view of the entire Ui24R mix environment, represented as a single large console surface. Users can see graphics of their gate, compressor, EQ curve, FX and Aux sends, and jump between controls for editing with simple double-clicks. This feature is designed for use on 1080p resolutions screens.

Expanded Touch Screen Support: Users now have more options for touchscreen control of Ui24R with more than 25 leading touchscreens, which directly connect to the Ui24R via HDMI and USB.

New Zealand’s annual music awards ceremony, Silver Scrolls, was recently presented at the Dunedin Town Hall with Lorde winning the 2017 APRA Silver Scroll Award for her hit song ‘Green Light’.

AV production company Strawberry Sound Hire supplied audio for the evening, with event production company RB Productions coordinating the ceremony.

David Craig, Sound Engineer for Strawberry, handled all audio management for the event. “It is a corporate awards gig, yet still a rock ‘n roll show as you are handling a number of live bands and artists over the evening,” he says. “So the PA system that you need should smoothly handle speech as well as the music dynamics of a band. One also needed to take the tricky acoustics of the venue into consideration.”

Due to the acoustic requirement of ensuring accurate and even coverage and the nature of the gig, a JBL VTX line array system was supplied. The audio system featured a total of 12 JBL VTX V20 line array elements – six per side for the main PA. Three JBL VTX G28 subwoofers were deployed per side in a cardioid configuration. Three VT 4886 subcompact line array elements were ground stacked per side and used as stage fills, while another two single VT 4886s were used as a mono infill.

In-ear monitoring wasn’t an option due to limited rehearsal time, so JBL SRX 712 loudspeakers were used for on-stage monitoring with a total of seven monitor mixes. Sound engineers Kevin Bennett (monitors) kept the artists happy while Chris Tate (FOH) delivered a clean mix for FOH.

Kevin Bennett was very happy with his choice of console for monitors. “I was given an option to use a number of digital consoles and opted for the new smaller format Soundcraft Vi2000,” says Bennett. “As a digital console it is much faster to navigate and operate, has superb audio quality, it is dependable, and I suppose my love of the BSS DPR901ii Dynamic EQ helped to sweeten the deal! This was the first opportunity I had mixing with the smaller format Vi and I have to say that the Vi2000 is now my go-to console.”

All loudspeakers were powered by Crown V-Racks, which included Crown I-Tech 4x3500HD models with Crown’s DriveCore technology. System management and control were handled with JBL HiQnet Performance Manager software.

“Planning for this show from an audio perspective can be quite hectic as we received the riders a week before the event.” explains David Craig. “The new updates in Performance Manager are awesome as they allowed us to do so much planning before the venue. Performance Manager and Line Array Calculator saved heaps of time and energy and very little change was needed once we were in the venue.”

A Soundcraft Vi3000 digital console was used at FOH and mixed by Chris Tate. The show was broadcast on radio and television, so Audio was split via MADI with a 300-metre fibre cable run to an iso-room where the feeds were mixed for broadcast.

“Mixing multiple bands and artists in a show like this keeps us on our toes and mixing on the Vi3000 console really simplified the production process,” says Chris Tate. “Workflow is great, using show cues, patching of channels and arranging tie lines is a breeze. I enjoy how the Vi3000 is easy to clock-sync with other products while MADI provides for an efficient audio distribution solution.”

Soundcraft has come up with some new Notepad mixers and they’re pretty adorable. Three models form the family, two of which offer Lexicon DSP and a USB interface. The Notepad-5 is the baby of the bunch with a single XLR combi input, and two stereo line inputs via both TRS and RCA connectors. The Notepad-8FX and Notepad-12FX both have a fader for the master channel, more inputs (four mic preamps on the -12FX), three-band EQs, aux and headphone outputs, plus built-in DSP including Lexicon reverbs, chorus, delay and tap tempo control. Joining the similar mini mixer offerings from Behringer, Allen & Heath, Mackie, and others, the Soundcraft Notepad models look to be one of those ‘desert island’ tools every audio pro needs sitting in their studio or car boot.

Also from Soundcraft is two new Mini Stagebox models, the 32i and 16i, designed specifically for the Si series products. The rack-mount stageboxes are equipped with Studer-designed preamps and interface with an Si console via MADI for easy input expansion — up to 80 inputs for Si Impact after a firmware update coming in April. No local hardware configuration or option cards are needed or required — engineers can simply plug in, power on, select inputs and control remotely using a Soundcraft Si console.

Dedicated XLR mic pre inputs allow 32 or 16 simultaneous channels of external analogue input. Mini Stagebox 32i offers twelve analogue outputs, while Mini Stagebox 16i offers eight analogue outputs for connection to house and stage monitors and broadcast or streaming feeds.

The new AKG C636 master reference handheld condenser microphone that builds on the legacy of the C535.

Three proprietary technologies are featured in the new C636. Firstly, the uniform cardioid polar pattern helps eliminate feedback throughout the entire frequency spectrum with a specially designed suspension and grille for the capsule, helping avoid unwanted sound reflections on the back of the capsule. Secondly, the C636 innovates by integrating a double shock suspension system to reduce handling noise. The capsule sits on a highly absorbent rubber bearing that eliminates any structure-based noise while an adjustable balancing network cancels vibrations over a wide frequency range. Lastly, a multilayer protection system prevents unwanted pop noises. The protection system consists of the grille itself, a foam layer behind the grille, and a magnetically attached computer-modelled mesh layer on top of the capsule for plosive-free performance.

Also new from AKG is the P5i dynamic vocal microphone designed to automatically configure with the Harman Connected PA ecosystem for easy setup and recall of performer and presets. The design is based on the P5 vocal mic. It features a supercardioid polar pattern, heavy-duty metal body construction, and an integrated windscreen to efficiently tame plosives and wind noise.

The Harman stall adds a new self-powered master reference studio monitor from JBL called the JBL 7 Series. With patented waveguides developed for the JBL M2, the new 705P five-inch and 708P eight-inch monitors deliver high output and lots of detail.

The 725GF five-inch low frequency transducer used in the 705P model provides 14mm peak-to-peak excursion with low frequency output down to 39Hz. The 728G eight-inch LF transducer inside the 708P leverages JBL Differential Drive technology to reduce compression and provide greater sustained output and extended linear low frequency performance to 35Hz.

JBL has also put out a Monitor Management Tuning System called Intonato 24 for easy automated calibration and complete control of monitoring systems in stereo, surround, and immersive audio production rooms. Housed in a 2U rack-mount enclosure, Intonato 24 can calibrate and control systems of up to 24 speakers with customised recallable routing of up to 24 sources selected from 24 dedicated analogue, 24 digital, and 256 networked audio sources. It includes a calibration microphone and Automated Speaker Calibration process that ‘tunes’ each speaker to compensate for speaker placement and room acoustics for a more neutral response at the mix position. A graphical interface lets you control Intonato 24 from Mac, Windows, and a range of tablets. Complete configurations can be saved as ‘profiles’ and ‘scenes’ and instantly recalled to meet client or project requirements.

Not to be left out, Soundcraft released the new Ui24R digital mixing and multitrack recording systems that delivers flexible I/O and wireless control. The system can be controlled by up to 10 devices via Ethernet or built-in dual-band wi-fi. Lexicon, dbx and DigiTech DSP is onboard, as well as Studer preamps.

The Ui24R has 10 combo/XLR, 10XLR, two line level, and two digital mix channels for a total of 24 simultaneous inputs. dbx AFS2 automatic feedback suppression is available on all monitor outputs. What’s more, the Ui24R lets you redundantly record a stereo mix, plus all 22 multitrack inputs, directly to a USB storage drive and a connected computer.

Perhaps the biggest news from Harman was the introduction of Connected PA. Designed to be a complete integrate ecosystem of live sound products with app control at its core, Connected PA gives centralised control over setup and configuration of audio systems. And because it’s made by Harman, it brings together Soundcraft mixing consoles, AKG microphones, dbx stage boxes, and JBL speakers via Harman’s ioSys technology.

“Musicians need a fast and easy way to set up their PA system so they can focus on performing instead of worrying about their equipment,” said Noel Larson, Senior Global Manager, Harman Professional Solutions. “The Harman Connected PA system provides musicians a simple and effective way to set up and operate their entire PA system from one central app, with minimal pro audio skills or previous live sound experience.”

At launch, compatible products include:

Souncraft Ui12, Ui16, and Ui24R digital mixers

JBL PRX800W Series loudspeakers

dbx DI1 active direct box

AKG P5i microphone

Soundcraft’s Ui Series digital consoles can now benefit from a free firmware update, which adds several new features and extends browser and device compatibility.

Taking user feedback into account, Soundcraft engineers have included many requested features within the firmware update. The software now supports Microsoft’s latest Edge browser, and the Ui12 now includes stereo recording features—previously possible only on the Ui16.

An improved password-protected Access Limitation System lets mix engineers assign secure access privileges to other users, with more flexibility to create individual user control. A new Sync ID feature has also been added, allowing users to maintain channel Sync across multiple browser windows, on different displays or even devices. You can open multiple GUI Edit windows (EQ, DYN, and FX) and have them maintain channel sync. The user can select a channel on any of these pages and instantly view and control all EQ, DYN and FX values across devices and displays.

The free update for the Ui Series mixers is available now from Soundcraft’s website.
