The Rode product stable is already deep and diverse, with products catering to seemingly everyone – recording studios, podcasters, mobile content makers, venues and video shooters. And now Rode has introduced the Wireless PRO (yes, the ‘pro’ is capitalised), a video-focused wireless microphone kit that packs a lot of promise into its small frame. But does it live up to the capitalised name?

Opening the package and it’s off to a promising start. There’s enough bundled into the kit to deal with almost any situation a typical videographer is likely to encounter. Two wireless transmitters, one receiver, two threaded lavalier microphones, a short 3.5mm to 3.5mm coiled cable, two different sets of dead cats, various clips and magnets, a USB-C-to-Lightning cable and enough USB-C cables to be useful. These are all housed snugly across two small cases: one acts as charger/battery for the transmitters (think Airpod holder/charger) while the other contains the various accessories.

JUST IN CASE

The cases are almost identical, save for the weight. The charging dock is undoubtedly clever and very welcome – the unit has enough juice inside it for two full extra charges away from any power source. However, the decision to package a Wireless PRO system across two cases is a little confusing. There’s not enough space in the charger case for the various accessories you’re likely to want to have with you, so you’re most likely going to always need to take two cases with you anyway. It’s not a show-stopping issue, however it seems like a complication when it comes to packing out a shooting kit, and it’s not difficult to envision nightmare scenarios where the wrong case is packed, or even worse, left behind.

There’s a lot more to Wireless PRO than its transport cases. The transmitter/receiver combo is the star of the show and they’re instantly impressive pieces of kit. Sharing the same form factor as the Wireless Go and Wireless Me units, they’re similar in size and feel to a smartwatch — well built, and with just enough heft to appreciate that it’s a cutting-edge piece of tech. The trio are almost exactly the same size and shape, but the receiver is differentiated by having a small LCD screen built into it. Crisp and bright, the screen conveys level meters and important parameter settings with a minimum of fuss. There’s no real menu-diving required to get up and running, and the screen is easily readable in full sunlight and dark spaces alike. Syncing the transmitters to the receiver is effortless, and the three-button operation required to get up and running is intuitive straight out of the box.

BECAUSE I’M APP-Y

Like any modern gadget, as soon as it connected to my phone it wanted to do an update, which thankfully was quick and pain-free. Once updated, it then launched the app store, where three apps were recommended to me. After a quick search online, two seemed to be relevant to my needs – Rode Capture and Rode Central. Unsurprisingly, the Capture app is centred around recording video, while Rode Central allows you to Bluetooth into the receiver and get into the nitty-gritty of the unit and manipulate its settings and functions.

The wireless lavalier market is already crowded with worthy contenders, but Rode Wireless PRO is the most evolved in the space and does more than others in the price bracket by a good margin. The Wireless PRO is another hit for Rode and represents the next era in wireless sound at a competitive price.

Requiring apps to make technology work is the new norm, and Rode deserves praise for how it has approached the task of interfacing with the units. No sign-ups or logins or passwords or accounts or adverts or extra steps; simply connect and then make your selections. It’s a seamless affair that some other manufacturers should pay close attention to. Even using the app in extreme conditions would be painless, unlike other apps that require data coverage and logins just to make changes to a device.

Once you’re connected with the Rode Central app, you can peek under the bonnet and see what the PRO can really do. SMPTE timecode generation is a notable addition to this system that’s sure to please multicam shooters who rely on timecode to keep footage aligned across cameras. There are a few different timecode routing options which should cover most typical situations and cameras.

32-BIT FLOAT

Another big addition to the Wireless PRO is 32-bit float recording built into the units. Ask any run-and-gun videographer what the hardest part of filming is and most will tell you it’s recording good audio. Wireless lavalier kits are famous for somehow being both too loud and too quiet at exactly the same time, often resulting in frustrating edits and anxiety just trying to get usable interview audio. Without falling down a mathematical rabbit hole, it’s safe to say the 32-bit float format has quickly been embraced by the video crowd for its extremely forgiving nature when it comes to dynamics, specifically how it copes with clipping and noise floor.

So can we finally stop worrying about setting perfect levels thanks to 32-bit float recording on the Wireless PRO? Functionally, the answer is ‘yes’. In practice, you really can just relax and let the internal recording take care of capturing clean audio. There’s very little downside to the new format, and the Rode Central software wrangles the files quickly and easily so you can get them into your favourite editor. Once you start to work with the files, the benefit of 32-bit float recording is evident – you really can push the results further than standard 16-bit recordings. It feels similar to the difference between RAW photography and JPEG in terms of latitude in post production and the benefits far outweigh whatever workflow changes it requires.

Even when examining waveforms closely, spikes and pops that should have clipped aren’t actually square and crunchy, while, at the other end of the spectrum, quiet recordings are easily boosted to usable levels. This doesn’t mean that wind or handling noise is suddenly sonically pleasing or wanted, but it does represent a real leap in capturing audio and it’s likely to fast become the standard for any recorder designed for fieldwork.

SMART & NIMBLE

Using the Wireless PRO with both smartphones and cinema cameras was straightforward and delivered solid results. The buttons on the units allow you to quickly get your output levels right and the screen gives you all the useful info required. Being able to record audio separately with each transmitter opens up lots of flexibility to how you work; much fun can be had in treating one transmitter as a traditional interview mic with another acting as a location recorder. Thanks to the small size and its handy clip, you can even treat it as a kind of GoPro for audio, allowing you to get usable recordings in a variety of unique ways that would have previously been cumbersome. This will be particularly handy for shooting live performances, where you frequently have to blend different audio sources in an edit.

While the Wireless PRO is squarely focused on the video crowd, it makes a strong case for itself in other areas too – podcasters, field recordists and venues would all benefit from how speedy and adaptable it is, and that’s not taking into account the fact that the receiver can also act as an audio interface for computers. It’s an extremely capable and versatile piece of kit that, above just doing its job well, should also solve many of the typical problems that crop up on a shoot or event.

The wireless lavalier market is already crowded with worthy contenders, but Wireless PRO is the most evolved in the space and does more than others in the price bracket by a good margin. Wireless Pro will happily replace the ageing wireless lavs in my own kit. Not because it’s more ‘pro’, but rather because it’s more user friendly, more forgiving and more suited to capturing clean audio without the need for a dedicated sound operator. The Wireless PRO is another hit for Rode and represents the next era in wireless sound at a competitive price.

Okay, so this isn’t one piece of gear, it’s more like 50. Lately I’ve been building it up and it’s been a constant source of inspiration. I try to use it in ways that wouldn’t make sense to do in the box. It’s great for happy accidents, plugging things in accidentally and finding something totally unexpected. I usually use it as a sound design tool and then chop things up in my DAW rather than as a compositional tool but it really is a wild beast of unlimited possibilities. I work much slower on it than on a computer which is sometimes annoying but on the flipside you’re forced to spend more time thinking about each step, so it generates different results.

It’s a classic instrument. It’s moved between a bunch of studios of mine, and I love it. It’s made it onto countless records I’ve produced for myself and others. I have a bunch of nice piano VSTs but I find the creaks and finger noises etc. are irreplaceable for getting a really organic and human feel. This piano also has a really beautiful mute pedal that lends itself well to intimate songs.

My studio is designed so that everything runs through this mixing desk. I’ve had it for 12 years or so and I can’t seem to part ways with it even though it takes up so much space. Every acoustic instrument and even all my synths and my modular run through it. It’s also got two inputs per channel so I run my DAW outputs into the second channel so I can press a button and route anything I want from my DAW through it as well. I have the auxiliaries patched to a bunch of ever-rotating guitar pedals so I can do delay or reverb throws or parallel compression on the way in. It’s a really fun and tactile way to get great sounds into the computer before you even look at a screen.

This is the only vintage synth I own (for now). It’s just such a classic. It has all the basic functions you need put together in a super intuitive way so that it’s fun to play with. It also sounds super rich. My interest in the SH-101 was first piqued when I discovered that one of my fave acs (Bicep) used it in almost every song they release. It really comes to life once you add some FX and processing but you’re really starting with the best source possible if you’re after a classic square or saw mono synth sound.

Michael Bell: I bought the Moog because I wanted more hands-on control and responsiveness. After Ben bought the Prophet 12 I could see how that was helping to direct our creativity and I wanted that for our bass sounds and sequences as well. The Moog Sub 37 is a two-note paraphonic analogue synth. Having those two separate oscillator voices has really helped us to create a wide range of sounds and taken us down some interesting creative avenues. For one of our songs Float, the chords on that are all Moog.

The arp/sequencer is a great way of creating and tweaking sounds. I latch the arp and slowly figure out the best envelope settings, for example. We’ve created some unique sounds and sequences with interesting velocity response.

Ben Woolner: Most of a good SAFIA mix is around the relationship between the bass and kick, and then the vocal balance. Spending that time jamming to perfectly sculpt the bass around the kick is always a good idea. Those are the songs which just jump out of the speakers.

It’s such a rich forward sound because of those two voices. Creating a sound with two harmonies moving together is something you could probably recreate with a Moog plug-in, but it’d take days getting it there.

Ben: It’s just a nice opto compressor that you can hit hard. I put it at the front end when I’m recording a vocal performance. You sing differently when you can hear it grabbing on – you can do something similar with plug-ins, but it’s a bit harsher. With this Buzz Audio device, you can really push into it and you get different kinds of performances as a result. Without a good vocal performance the song probably won’t work. So anything that helps with that performance is a big deal.

Ben: It’s an amazing synth, especially for anything expansive. The longer we produce music, the more we’re able to make good choices around where things should sit. I think we now have better ears. We understand what timbres work best. Then as we bring in nice pieces of gear like the Prophet 12, we can incorporate them a lot quicker in that writing process. We don’t spend too much time getting lost in the choices. We’re building upon what we know works.

Ben: I’ll take my U87 into the studio to record vocals. We have the gear to record at home but going into the studio and working with Michael and an engineer helps me to maintain a good perspective.

Michael: I think it’s good to have two of us there because inevitably Ben is going to be listening for imperfections in the performance while I can help ensure we don’t lose an amazing take because of an imperfection.

Ben: I agree. As a vocalist it’s easy to be a bit too self conscious and, as a result, you can sometimes miss the magic.

Ben: At one stage I used the Bricasti on everything. Now, I’m more selective. For songs that require a big enveloping space, it’s unbeatable. Once you A/B the Bricasti with anything else it’s hard to go back. The only reason I wouldn’t use it is when I want something more gnarly. But you can always dirty it up after printing the sound.

Highway Series follows in the footsteps of Fender’s Acoustasonic lineup. Released in 2019, Acoustasonic blurs the lines between acoustic and electric guitar design, feel and function.

After spending a few minutes with Highway Series, it clearly borrows from Acoustasonic’s design, but it’s also clearly less of an attempt to be an acoustic/electric guitar hybrid. These are unashamedly acoustic guitars, and the only thing that could make you think otherwise is their thinness and the location of the tone and volume knobs. Otherwise, the playing experience feels like an acoustic, it resonates like an acoustic, and when plugged in, sounds like an acoustic.

However, it’s still smaller than a ‘real’ acoustic guitar. According to Fender, this design decision was to make Highway Series more attractive to guitarists who spend a lot of time on stage, desiring a more comfortable and ergonomic instrument without sacrificing acoustic tone in a live situation.

ZERO DREAD

Fender sent AT a Highway Series Dreadnought acoustic guitar. Dreadnought is one of the larger acoustic guitar shapes, but don’t let that fool you into thinking the Highway Series guitars are large. Upon arrival I couldn’t help but notice that, although the shape of the top is indeed dreadnought, the thin profile makes the guitar beautifully ergonomic. The contoured back makes the instrument sit neatly against the body much like a Stratocaster.

Manufactured in Fender’s facility in Ensenada, Mexico, Highway Series is a beautifully designed guitar. The body is a 5.7cm-thick hollowed out piece of mahogany with its wavy woodgrain pattern glistening under the matte finish. A mahogany neck is overlaid with an Indian rosewood fingerboard with micro-tilt adjustment and a Strat-style headstock and tuners. An understated railroad binding on the solid Sitka spruce top gives it a vintage vibe. The bridge and knobs are a matching ebony-coloured wood.

Both the Dreadnought and Parlor models that form the Highway Series do not have cutaways. Whether that’s a dealbreaker or not is a personal choice, but I imagine a cutaway would slightly compromise the resonance you might get out of the small body – and resonance is a key priority for Fender when designing these guitars.

IN THE HAND

Let’s talk about expectations vs reality. I knew the Highway Series wasn’t going to project sound the way my Martin does. That didn’t keep me from holding a tiny hope that it would sound more like a ‘proper’ acoustic guitar than it does. What I’m saying is, even if you try to manage your expectations before strumming a first chord on a Highway Series guitar, you probably won’t be blown away by its natural acoustic voicing.

But I let the guitar sit in the living room for a few days where I knew I’d pick it up at random and hopefully bond with it. Slowly but surely, it grew on me. I began to appreciate the confident resonance and balanced tone radiating from the floating X-braced body which undoubtedly sounds bigger than it is. The bolt-on mahogany neck with a slim profile felt buttery smooth and eminently playable. Dynamically, the guitar responded with ease to being strummed vigorously with a hard plectrum, or gently fingerpicked at low volume. Of course it doesn’t have the luscious low end of a full-size dreadnought or jumbo, but I was increasingly convinced the Highway Series’ comfort and versatility gives it a place in a guitarist’s collection.

FISHMAN FLUENCE

Noodling on the sofa is one thing. Playing live is another. Fender assures us that Highway Series is right at home on stage. That’s largely thanks to the interesting black pickup that curves around the neck-end of the soundhole. Fishman Fluence is a family of pickups designed mostly for electric guitar, but Fender and Fishman worked together to custom-design the version in Highway Series, specifically for Highway Series. That’s right – you won’t find this pickup in any other guitar on the market.

Most notably, Fluence isn’t a piezo system. Piezo pickups are the traditional choice for acoustic guitars but Fender treads a different path here.

Like a piezo, Fluence is still powered by a 9V battery accessed at the back of the guitar body. The pickup has a warm tone with abundant low end thanks in part to its strategic placement. Being a smaller body, there’s a proclivity for the reduced resonance potential of Highway Series to result in a strident and harsh tone if the pickup sat near the bridge, closer to where a piezo system would be. This is offset quite effectively by situating it right at the base of the neck, delivering a much deeper and richer plugged-in sound. Through a nice PA, the Fishman Fluence sounds the business with a big, lush and enveloping richness. I noted how little nasal honk was present compared to the piezo pickups typically installed in acoustic guitars where I often carve out a big chunk around 1kHz. Fluence also sounds less ‘dry’ to my ears than a piezo system, and responds favourably to compression, reverb and delay.

Controls on the Highway Series are analogue, as opposed to Acoustasonic with its onboard DSP. There’s a simple Volume knob and a secondary Tone knob that sounds like a basic mid scoop. Extra tone sculpting control would be useful, and this is one area where Highway Series could be easily improved. A basic three-band EQ, for example, is fairly standard on a piezo pickup system and in the case of Highway Series would be of much value to a performing guitarist. The single tone knob means, if you desire to shape your tone with more nuance, you’d want to run the guitar through an EQ pedal. If anything, the plugged-in sound of a Highway Series guitar is at risk of being over-enthusiastic in the bass frequencies, especially in a sub-heavy PA environment. Again, nothing an EQ pedal can’t fix.

LIFE IS A HIGHWAY

At first glance, Highway Series is a peculiar product (as was Acoustasonic), and the only way to make head or tail of it is to live with it for a while. Having spent a few weeks with the instrument, my conclusion basically aligns with Fender’s proposition: acoustic guitarists who spend a lot of time on stage – Highway Series is for you. Unless you have a particular affection for the bulk of a full-size acoustic guitar, Highway Series is more ergonomic and comfortable to wear, hold, and play for long periods. The Fishman Fluence pickup means the physical downsize doesn’t result in a sonic downsize. Fluence excels in a live setting. I only wish there was more tonal control.

And, on the occasion where you find yourself jamming on the tour bus or in a motel room, it’s nice to know the Highway Series doesn’t sound like it’s made of cardboard but can actually project its voice commendably. Still, I wouldn’t expect many people will buy one of these guitars for their acoustic tone, and you probably won’t reach for one in a studio recording situation. Fender has reimagined the acoustic guitar for ergonomics and live sound performance, and if you’re missing either or both of those things, then you owe it to yourself to take a look.

Mixing in small rooms is a fact of life. Not everyone has a perfectly treated mix environment where sound waves have the room to develop and the pesky problem frequencies are addressed with their own Helmholtz resonators.

The issue is, how can you trust your mixes if you’re in a room that’s acoustically tarnishing the true response of your expensive studio monitors? Or if the room’s modest size means you’re sitting half a metre too close to your monitors than their optimum listening distance?

Option one: mix on headphones. Option two: drop a couple of grand on acoustic treatment. Option three: try some ultra nearfield studio monitors.

GET CLOSER

The Kali Audio IN-UNF studio monitors occupy this ‘ultra nearfield’ category. A clue is its unconventional form factor, which diverges from a typical rectangular speaker cabinet with forward-facing drivers that’s placed at least a metre away. Rather, with an ideal listening distance of 0.8m, the IN-UNF is designed to be up close and personal. It’s the audio equivalent of ultra short throw projection in the sense that it’s optimised for a short ‘throw’ distance. This configuration achieves a couple of things. Firstly, it means you can monitor at lower levels. Secondly, it reduces the influence of a room’s acoustics to the degree that the proximity means your ears receive more direct sound and less reflected sound.

The IN-UNF is a three-way monitoring system in Kali’s Project Independence line of products. The two ball-shaped satellites house the same coaxial drivers used in Kali Audio’s IN-5 and IN-8 with a four-inch midrange driver and one-inch textile dome tweeter extending up to 25kHz (±3dB). The subwoofer (which could be mistaken for a CPU tower) is designed to sit on your desk – not on the floor. Two horizontally opposed 4.5-inch drivers cancel out vibrations transmitted to the desk’s surface and supply low frequency extension down to 47Hz (±3dB). Crossover points are at 280Hz and 2.8kHz.

Hooking the system up begins with the subwoofer. Once powered via IEC cable, plug the two passive satellites into the sub using the included banana connectors. Audio input options include balanced 6.5mm TRS, stereo 3.5mm, USB-C, and Optical. The USB-C input means you can use the IN-UNF without an audio interface.

ALL ABOUT LOCATION

Positioning of each unit is of crucial importance. One thing I appreciated about the Kali Audio IN-5 was its hyper accurate stereo imaging. To achieve the same precision with the IN-UNF, Kali Audio insists the satellites must sit in a very particular spot relative to the subwoofer, denoted on the included A4 placement card with traced positions. Aiming the satellites directly up at your ears is important, too, and easily done thanks to the rounded silicone pads they sit on. The subwoofer can sit vertically or horizontally. I elected to use the sub horizontally as a monitor riser. It’s a big unit (49cm wide, 29cm deep, 13cm tall), so sitting it vertically may be your only option if your desk isn’t very deep.

A series of dip switches sit next to the input connectors. Settings for different placements and configurations (boundary EQ) are available here, including 2dB boosts for bass, mids, and treble, and a 4dB bass boost on its own.

ULTRA NEARFIELD

How’s the ultra nearfield experience? I have to be honest – it takes some getting used to. With typical studio monitors sitting horizontally at ear level, I am accustomed to the stereo image spreading out in front of me like a widescreen TV. Because the IN-UNF satellites sit at desk height angled up – much like a pair of Logitech computer speakers – listening to tunes with the expectation of a studio monitor experience was initially disorienting, and felt somewhere in between listening on headphones and being in a fishbowl.

After telling myself to give the monitors a proper go, my ears began to settle into the IN-UNF experience. The full stereo spread is still very much present; all the precision of the bigger IN-Series siblings is evident in the IN-UNF and imaging is firm and articulate. It’s just lower. That may sound weird and obvious, but it took a few days before it felt natural.

One thing’s for sure: tonally, the IN-UNF’s are excellent studio monitors. Music is presented with a flat, honest neutrality. High and low frequencies extend smoothly in either direction. Worth noting is how the sub (on its flat setting) beautifully lifts the low end without sacrificing accuracy, and the unit’s placement at desk height between the satellite speakers seems to help everything glue together. On a slap bass track, for example, both the metallic ‘snap’ of the strings and the thump of the bottom end emanate from the same physical point, resulting in a super tight, focused and broadband sound.

From jazz to funk to pop to metal, the IN-UNF faithfully served back whatever I gave it without playing favourites, thanks in no small part to a particularly smooth midrange that neither flatters nor ruins source material. Trebles felt mildly under-represented to me, perhaps because my daily monitors are comparatively toppy, so the 2dB high shelf boost worked a treat. The textile dome tweeters have a sweet sound that’s a far cry from the piercing counterparts of other studio monitors in this price range. And the sub is really just a joy to mix with. Never obtrusive or overstated, it’s perfectly voiced for a small space and amazingly manages to maintain clean and tight low end even while sitting flat on a desk.

I also found the IN-UNF easy to monitor through for long periods. That may have something to do with the fact I didn’t feel a need to crank the speakers up in order to adequately hear a mix, and I’m sure the lower monitoring levels combined with the gentle trebles contribute to the lack of listening fatigue.

FIELD GOAL

Being my first encounter with ultra nearfield monitoring, the Kali Audio IN-UNF has sold me on the concept. Placing a large pair of monitors at its optimal distance from the listening position might be impossible in a small room. The IN-UNF solves this problem, yet without making sonic compromises. The inclusion of the subwoofer is what allows the IN-UNF to compete with (or replace) a pair of traditional nearfields, letting you rest assured the full frequency spectrum is adequately covered, and it certainly sounds good enough to take seriously as a studio monitor.

If you’re in a situation where bigger studio monitors would be overkill for your mixing environment but you don’t want to switch exclusively to headphones, the IN-UNF could be the perfect choice. Just remember to allow for a brief adjustment period.
