Apple has unveiled Logic Pro for iPad. Music creators can now unleash their creativity in new ways that are only possible on iPad. Allen & Heath has announced the release of Avantis firmware V1.2, a major update delivering new features including a next-generation RTA engine, Sennheiser wireless integration and a trio of new additions to the dPack bundle of DEEP processors. 

Front and centre in V1.2 is Allen & Heath’s new RTA engine, built around a comprehensive 61-band bar or line display which can be displayed behind the PEQ curve to enable swift and accurate EQ decisions. Additionally, a sonogram view is provided making it simple to identify room resonances or mix imbalances. With all RTA views also visible on iPad and Director, engineers can rely on accurate visual feedback anywhere in the venue. 

The dPack bundle has been expanded to include three new DEEP processors from the flagship dLive system: Bus is modelled on a legendary hardware compressor renowned for its ability to glue together mixes; Source Expander offers quick and easy control of threshold and depth for set-and-forget operation; while Dual Threshold Expander is perfect for challenging environments where expert control is required. Additionally, the existing OptTronik compressor has been updated to include “Model B” for a new flavour of classic 2A style optical compression. Existing dPack owners receive all new dPack updates and models for free. 

Avantis’ wireless integration has been extended to include Sennheiser’s 300/500, 2000 and 2050 wireless microphones, which can be monitored from both the mixer and Director. Key wireless information, including mutes, signal level and battery bars, is visible from the Bank view, with detailed information and control accessible via the Preamp page. “Following very positive feedback on the recent dLive integration, we are excited to see this expand to the stunning Avantis console” says Simon Beesley, Manager Strategic Alliances at Sennheiser. “Engineers and technicians will be able to remotely monitor and control our most successful wireless microphone series — the evolution wireless G3/G4 300 and 500 as well as 2000.”  

The release is rounded off with multiple workflow improvements including extended functionality for the iOS apps, enhanced DCA spill functionality and new SoftKey options.

Waves Audio announces the new V13 for all Waves SoundGrid applications. This release includes two brand-new applications: Waves MyFOH, a tablet app for remote control of the Waves eMotion LV1 live mixer; and Waves mRecall, a mobile app for remote snapshot/scene recall of Waves live sound (eMotion LV1 & SuperRack) and Waves Commercial Audio systems. Additionally, V13 includes updated versions of the following Waves SoundGrid applications: eMotion LV1 live mixer, SuperRack live plugin rack, MyMon personal monitor mixing app, SoundGrid QRec app for live recording and playback, and SoundGrid Studio.

The new Waves MyFOH tablet app has been a feature frequently requested by live sound engineers who use the Waves eMotion LV1 live mixer. MyFOH allows front-of-house engineers to control the LV1 over WiFi, from any iPad or Android tablet, and shape the live mix from anywhere in the venue. With MyFOH, engineers can evaluate their mix from the vantage point of the audience and adjust levels, panning and much more, for individual channels as well as groups, auxes, FX groups, DCAs and matrixes. MyFOH also allows to correct levels for front fills and delays, which are almost impossible to judge confidently from the static FOH position. If you are handling both FOH and monitor duties at the same show, you can also use MyFOH next to the musicians on stage rather than attempting effective communication from across the venue, creating a more personal, nuanced and professional experience for all involved. 

The new Waves mRecall is an iOS/Android app for quickly recalling scenes and snapshots created on Waves’ live systems and Waves’ Commercial Audio systems. Working over WiFi on both mobile phones and tablets, mRecall is a quick way to recall preprogrammed audio settings, both in live shows and in AV installations. In live shows, mRecall allows to remotely recall snapshots created on the Waves eMotion LV1 live mixer or the Waves SuperRack live plugin rack. On installed Waves Commercial Audio systems, mRecall allows end users to recall preprogrammed snapshots, without needing access to the equipment rack.

In addition, V13 features updates to Waves’ existing SoundGrid applications:

• The Waves SuperRack live plugin rack now supports up to four active and four redundant Waves SoundGrid servers, running together on one Waves SoundGrid live processing system. This allows live sound engineers to massively expand their processing power for live shows.

• The Waves eMotion LV1 live mixer now supports the aforementioned MyFOH and mRecall remote apps. The new V13 update also adds several more features requested by users, including new routing and channel selection options.

• All Waves SoundGrid applications, including the MyMon personal monitor mixing app and the SoundGrid QRec app for live recording and playback, feature additional bug fixes and performance improvements.

Digital mixers offer studio quality processing, total recall of all settings and even remote operation. All attractive features, thought often coming at the cost of increased size.

EZ-GAIN ASSISTED GAIN STAGING

Have you ever heard someone say, “you need to pay attention to your gain staging”? Do you know what the “gain structure” is about? When you are interested in clean and healthy signals, with low noise and low harmonic distortion, then adjusting the right amount of preamp gain is paramount. Since source signals can be anything from a strong hit on the snare drum, to the subtle hum of bees, there is not one gain fitting all possible purposes.

Gain staging is always a compromise and finding the right one requires either experience and technical knowledge, or the new FLOW 8 EZ-GAIN feature. The function can monitor signals on one or all channels at the same time, until you think the loudest sounds have been put to it. EZ GAIN will then automatically adjust the channel gain to the optimum headroom.

EZ GAIN will automatically engage the 48 V phantom power on mic inputs 1/2 when no signal is coming in, just in case you forgot to do that. It will switch it off again if no signal is coming in still.

FULL APP REMOTE CONTROL

Let’s face it, small mixers are more often placed where cables end, rather than in a position where it would be most useful for controlling the mix. You may have to stretch out for controlling levels or walk away from the mixer to judge if your adjustment has the desired effect. No longer!
