Incredible Sound, Incredible Vision

Attention-grabbing vlogs are as much about great sound as they are great video, and the Vlogger Kits will ensure every moment is captured in full definition.

They are light, compact, and even include a furry windshield for filming outdoors.

In a first for Røde, the Vlogger Kits have been designed to help vloggers capture incredible video as well as incredible audio. Together, the Tripod 2 and SmartGrip will ensure every shot is stable and perfectly framed, while the MicroLED provides a professional look to any situation. There is also a clip-on diffuser with eight coloured filters for capturing warm skin tones, cool outdoor scenes, and everything in between.

Simple & Versatile

The Vlogger Kits have been specifically designed to vastly improve the look and sound of smartphone content while being incredibly simple to use. Anyone can be vlogging in seconds.

The VideoMic in each Kit plugs directly into a smartphone and connects seamlessly with any recording app. Just plug it in and go. They can also be configured for main or ‘selfie’ camera use for maximum flexibility, and the accessories are quick and easy to set up, ensuring vloggers never miss a moment.

The included accessories are super-versatile, with the ergonomic Tripod 2 supporting both handheld and tabletop use and its gimbal head allowing for flexible positioning. The MicroLED and its diffuser and eight coloured filters ensure vloggers can adapt to any recording environment, with over four hours of operation available on a single charge – more than enough for even the longest vlogs.

The Røde Vlogger Kits are the perfect all-in-one mobile filmmaking solution for home moviemakers, mobile content creators, YouTubers, TikTokers and run ‘n’ gun journalists – anyone who wants to capture unforgettable content that looks and sounds incredible.

The Røde Vlogger Kits are currently shipping worldwide and will be available in-store in the coming weeks.

Rode’s VideoMic NTG sees two worlds collide — namely, the VideoMic family of utilitarian tools for videographers, and the NTG line of broadcast-style shotgun microphones aimed at audio professionals. The result is a versatile supercardioid self-powered videography mic up for grabs at a reasonable price.

Rode has ensured VideoMic NTG isn’t picky about what it’ll work with. This is the only shotgun mic I can think of that will happily function with a smartphone, laptop, camera, tablet, field recorder, you name it. There’s more than meets the eye with this little mic.

FUNCTION ROOM

Rode’s focus on functionality shows itself in a number of nifty little hacks. A little cable guide on the Rycote mount lets you stow excess cable length and avoid a large dangly loop around the camera. The gain pot is an ergonomic ring at the base of the microphone with a clear numeric readout as you turn it. The USB-C connector not only functions as a charging port but also allows the mic to interface with a computer as an input device e.g. to a DAW; perfect for a quick podcast recording or putting down a GarageBand scratch track of a musical idea. No drivers were necessary with my Mac — I plugged it in and saw audio instantly thanks to the auto-sensing power toggle. As the icing on the cake, the VideoMic NTG’s TRRS port turns into a headphone output when used this way.

The first button atop the mic toggles between 75Hz/150Hz HPF rolloffs while a long press will engage the high shelf boost, indicated by LEDs. The second button turns on a -20dB pad and a second press initiates the safety channel — a built-in measure of clipping insurance which records a second channel of audio at -20dB down to catch unexpected spikes cleanly. The LED next to these is a dB peak warning light.

Rode states a 30+ hour lifespan from the rechargeable lithium-ion battery. Supplied with the mic is the Rycote shockmount, a foam windshield and all necessary cables. The mic itself is built well and firmly slots into the shockmount. Weighing in at 94g, you’ll hardly notice the difference using it with a handheld camera rig or camcorder.

ON THE PHONE

Phone usability is invaluable. Plugging it into my Android smartphone with a USB-C to USB-C cable yielded instant level in my recording app and much better sounding audio than the built-in mics. In our editorial line of work we rely heavily on our phones to hastily record interviews and conversations with people. Video is also a big part of what we do, for which we use ‘proper’ cameras. I love that I can plug the VideoMic NTG into my phone to capture an interview, then move it straight to a hot-shoe to record audio on a professional camera. Just as easily I can take it home and plug it into my iPad to put down a quick recording of that song I’ve been writing. In today’s multi-device world, versatility equals bang for buck — and the Rode VideoMic NTG covers all bases.

As for the mic’s sound itself, it probably won’t blow your socks off. Especially if you’re a location recordist relying on purity and pristine signal paths. The mic’s self-noise (15dBA) is comparable to other shotguns of similar breed and it responds well when paired with a quality, quiet preamp. Tonally the VideoMic NTG has a slight low-mid lump that I felt compelled to scoop out more often than not — but that’s me nitpicking. The tight supercardioid polar pattern does an excellent job rejecting sound to the rear and sides of the mic. Overall, for capturing clean audio off the top of a camera, you can’t go wrong.

SHOTGUN SOUND, VIDEOMIC SIZE

The VideoMic NTG features the same annular line tube technology as the new NTG5, which employs acoustic perforations along the length of the microphone in place of the linear slots found in other shotguns and on-camera microphones. This acoustic design delivers a natural, uncoloured sound.

The mic also boasts an even frequency response, highly-directional supercardioid polar pattern, and very low self-noise.

FEATURE-PACKED

Building on developments made with the VideoMic Pro+, the VideoMic NTG features some powerful tools. These include a switchable high-pass filter (at 75Hz or 150Hz) to curtail troublesome low frequencies from wind, traffic, air conditioners, and other environmental noise, plus a high frequency boost to enhance detail and clarity – particularly useful when using a furry windshield. There’s a switchable -20dB pad for recording very loud sound sources, and for added security, a switchable safety channel that records a separate channel at -20dB in case the main channel clips – an absolute lifesaver.

The infinitely variable gain control on the rear of the mic allows users to precisely tailor the output level to their recording device. This is an active control that has a greater output range than other microphones on the market – it can deliver anything from mic level signal all the way to a headphone level output, providing incredible flexibility and improving DSLR sound quality.

An auto-power function automatically switches the mic on when the camera is turned on, ensuring it’s always ready to record, and also helps conserve battery life by switching the mic off when it’s unplugged or the camera is turned off. Speaking of battery life, the VideoMic NTG contains a rechargeable lithium-ion battery that provides 30+ hours of recording – more than enough for the most demanding shoots. This is charged via USB-C (empty to full in two hours), meaning continuous recording is possible with a power pack.

On top of these features, an auto-sensing 3.5mm output intelligently switches between TRS and TRRS to accommodate both cameras and mobile devices – no need for adaptor cables! Finally, a handy dB peak warning light indicates when the internal preamp is clipping – this is particularly useful when recording loud sound sources. In these situations, the -20dB pad can be quickly engaged to attenuate the incoming signal.

USB MIC TOO

The VideoMic NTG is also a fully-featured USB microphone. Its class-compliant USB-C output allows users to plug directly into a computer, tablet, or smartphone, turning it into a studio-quality desktop USB mic, perfect for recording voiceovers, podcasts, gaming or livestreaming.

Headphones can be plugged into the 3.5mm output for monitoring of audio while using the USB output. The headphone level can be adjusted by the variable gain control. This also means the VideoMic NTG can be used as a desktop headphone amp.

THE SWISS ARMY MIC

With its high-quality shock mounting, sliding cold shoe rail, and integrated cable management, the mic is at home atop any DSLR or mirrorless camera. But it’s also light and compact enough for use with smartphone rigs and small cameras, and rugged enough to be used on a boom pole or pistol grip on-location, and it can be used on a desktop as a USB mic.

Key Features Of The RØDE NTG5:

Innovative acoustic design, delivering a natural, uncoloured sound.

Lightweight (76g), short shotgun microphone (203mm), making it far easier to handle on set than other shotgun mics, especially when used on a boom pole.

Tailored frequency response and very low self-noise of just 10dbA, making it ideal for location recording, professional filmmaking, and other critical recording situations.

Highly directional supercardioid polar pattern and smooth off-axis response.

RF-bias technology and conformal coating ensure consistent performance in adverse weather conditions.

Comes in a complete location recording kit with windshield, pistol grip and other accessories – the NTG5 is ready to take into the field right out of the box.

Ports Not Slits

Most striking about the NTG5 is the new body. The design has been completely overhauled, with circular acoustic ports replacing the linear slots found in other shotgun mics. This design is the result of many months of specialised acoustic testing that began during the development of the TF5 – our new premium small diaphragm condenser mic designed in collaboration with legendary engineer Tony Faulker. The TF5’s capsule features a unique perforated acoustic vent design and this breakthrough led us to completely reimagine the NTG5’s design, with acoustic perforations employed along the length of the microphone.

The result is a shotgun mic with a new level of acoustic transparency, and a natural, uncoloured sound that will sound superb in a wide variety of applications. The annular line tube technology intrinsic to the NTG5’s design sets it apart from all other microphones in its category, sure to see it through to industry success.

A Boon For Boom

The NTG5 features a short, lightweight aluminium body, making it one of the most compact professional shotgun mics on the market – a dream for boom operators who find themselves on long, demanding shoots, or filmmakers and sound recordists looking for a more portable and lightweight rig that delivers broadcast-grade audio.

On Location

Boasting an ideal, tightly controlled frequency response and very low self-noise, the NTG5 sounds spectacular in a wide variety of applications, particularly location recording and demanding filmmaking scenarios where superlative audio is imperative.

RF-bias technology and conformal coating ensure the NTG5 is reliable in adverse environments. It is designed to be taken everywhere, with excellent resistance to wet conditions, high humidity, severe cold, and dust. The NTG5 comes in a complete location recording kit, featuring the new WS10 windshield, redesigned pistol grip, and other accessories – it’s ready to be taken into the field right out of the box.

The NTG5’s highly directional supercardioid polar pattern and smooth off-axis response deliver superb audio whether used on a boom pole, pistol grip, or on-camera. It is ideal for capturing dialogue and other detailed sound sources in any environment and intends to out-perform high-end shotgun microphones that cost several times more.
